Subject: Warning/Ban Messages

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

It's funny because I didn't get a warning when I was banned. I posted off topic and got randomly banned. Pretty random since I have been on Bungie.net for two years and never been banned or warned prior to this. I lost my rank and everything. It sucked.

I would of appreciated a warning first.

EDIT: And it wasn't really very off-topic. Well, it was. But I didn't know I couldn't reply first in a thread. I've seen thousands of other people do it and get unbanned and as soon as I attempt to do it I get banned for a week.

Well it probably depends how off-topic you were.

I thought I had some relevancy but I wasn't posting anything outside of Bungie, their games, and the community.

I would of been mad if I was banned.

I will definitely make more of an effort personally to convey these messages.
I don't think you need to make an effort. I don't want this to seem like I'm having a go at anyone.

I'm just saying that the more information in the message, the better the result you will get with the warning/ban (i.e. dissuading members from breaking the rules again)

I think you just need to assume that the member was posting with good intentions in mind and are not expecting to be warned or banned, therefore they're not going to understand why they were if they are.

I'm going to go ahead and duck out of here before it implodes. Can't risk the bad PR, but my final statement would be just to use common sense. If you get warned for posting off topic or anything else for that matter. I would sure try not to go back and repeat the same mistake.

Assuming that you know what that mistake was... ;)

This is the Community Forum not the Post Your Like For Old Bungie Games Forum. Your post would have been better off in either the Flood or the Universe forum since they have nothing to do with this site's community.

But Bungie.net doesn't allow special characters. :( Otherwise I would.

And, especially relevant to this case, assuming there's even a way to continue on without repeating that mistake. Bring back the underground etc.

IMO; the warning/ban messages should be short and sweet. Generally speaking if we a person does something wrong, they know why.
In instances where there may be some confusion a PM to the Ninja would be a great way to further understand, if you don't.
On the other hand, if a Ninja bans or warns a user, and the circumstances are less than desirable, I think the Ninja should take the step first and PM them along with the ban/warn message to explain their actions furthers.

That sounds dumb.

I see people do that all the time and never get banned.

Have you ever considered reporting more? I hear it's the coming thing.

Yeah I do, I report people all the time if they like post a bad link or make a post that is bad.

That's what I thought. I haven't been banned or even warned in my two years here and I finally got my heroic rank and then I got banned for a week for posting "first" in a thread.

I didn't even get warned. I tried appealing saying "I'm sorry and that I didn't know that counts as spam as I see so many people doing it" and he said "Too bad." basically.

That raised two questions in my head. What is the warning system for if the mods aren't going to use it. And, secondly, why is there an appeal system if they can just respond "Too bad."

Made me angry that I lost my heroic title and everything just for replying with one simple word.

Not only that but how do you know they weren't warned?

Also you fail under the misconception that Ninjas moderate 'by site' as in, they go around /looking/ for threads to lock and people to ban.
They use the report queue and moderate from there, if they happen across a thread that needs locked or a user banned, they do it, but its not generally the norm.
If you want things taken care of, report more. Its all you can do.

I was joking, by the way, you may as well be pissing into an ocean of piss by reporting. While we're prattling on in here about the most inane nonsense, there are posters with brilliantly subtle names like "Econo Troll" [a 4 day old account with no gt, no avatar, no groups] churning out blatant troll threads about US politics/economics. I'd feel guilty reporting that post simply because the energy wasted by the routers transmitting the request and the server processing the request contributes to climate change, but also because it's not going to make any difference.

Yax is a shining beacon in these dark times. You should all strive to be more like Yax.

I agree. But, of course, a lengthier ban message is only required if it's clear the user doesn't know his/her way around the forums and needs directing.

  • 07.12.2011 7:20 AM PDT

Posted by: ShadowLegacyIf you're going to criticise the moderation here (not implying that's a bad thing to do), could you at least make a little bit of effort not to lie about your bans?

More people need to report; By saying, 'Its not going to make a difference' and not reporting, you're making the problem worse.
If everyone had the mindset of 'Its not going to work, I'm not going to report', then nothing will ever get taken care of.
Part of the problem with The Flood is mindset, they want to talk about what they want to talk about. They're not going to report threads on religion and stuff, because they want those threads, even if they're against the rules.

But I garentee if you post a shock-site (I'm not saying actually do it), the thread will be collapsed in less than a few minutes.
The mindset needs to change. If its obviously a troll thread, report and move on.
Yes, its hard at times to ignore the stupid that has been posted, but its for the best. If more people reported, the forums wouldn't be the way they are.
By saying, 'reporting doens't do anything' you're just exacerbating the problem.

It's rather the opposite. If you're banning a user who clearly does know their way around the forums, and it's quite clear they weren't being malicious, the first thing you should do is ask yourself what the -blam!- you're doing banning/warning them, and the second you should do is write a quite lengthy explanation of why you've taken action, because chances are that user knows their way around the site as well as anyone else, making detailed explanation all the more important if they're still managing to fall foul.

Who said I didn't report it? I reported it [-blam!- the polar bears], mentioned it here, it's still alive. Even if something were to happen as a consequence of my actions I'd have no idea it'd happened, so to all intents and purposes, as far as I'm concerned [though with the notable exception of blatant shock sites], it has made no difference.
