Subject: What do you think BOBs are, canonly?

I think they could be ossoonas (spelling?). For thoose of you who still don't know, bobs are golden ranger elites who are extra strong but stay away from most battles. What do you think the explanation of them are, even if they are Easter eggs.

Well the word BOB (Born on Boat for those who dont know) was from marathon, but not the elites themselves (obviously).

And does this mean the elites have really no significance to canon and are just an extra thing in the game?

They're just an extra thing to the game.

Maybe. But what I meant was if they were to have an explanation canonly.

Actually BOB means Born on Board, not boat. Just wanted to clarify that.

I started up the heated debate on whether the SPARTAN-II in the cryo tube near the end of Reach is really Linda.
I created the Moa XING avatar pic.
Also I earned the All Star nameplate with this submission to Week 14 All Stars http://www.bungie.net/images/News/Inline11/bwu_0415/art/likea boss.jpg

That's like asking what Forge mode is canonically.

Even though they aren't canon, I guess you could say they are zealot rank rangers.

  • 07.12.2011 9:06 PM PDT

I would look at the "BOBs" in Reach as a kind of easter egg. There's nothing that puts them in the shaky canon of Halo, they're just a throwback to Marathon.

And barely at that.

I am Field Master Avu Med 'Telcam, Servant of the Abiding Truth, and I have many brothers.

A god who creates tools is still a god. It is not for us to impose qualifications upon the divine or presume to guess its intentions.

I've always had a little theory as to why BoB's are Ossoonas.

Let's look at the name, Ossona means Eye of the Prophets, for a rank of such importance (Although the Elites didn't see it that way), The armor issued to the Eye of the Prophets would undoubtedly be golden.

Now, let's look at the mission of Ossoonas. They are non combatants, they will not fight, their only goal is intelligence. They will defend themselves if necessary, but they will quickly try and leave the situation to protect the intel they have gathered and make sure they can return safely to the Prophets to get it to them, hence the BoB disappearing/not fighting.

To me they fit the perfect description of Ossoonas.

Now, totally unrelated: BoB Smackdown!

Isn't the armor of Ossoonas's grey, and they are always cloaked + don't carry many, if any weapons beyond plasma pistols?

No gray armor, That was never said anywhere.

They are equipped with cloak, just like BoB, hence why BoB cloaks

And weapons, the one we have seen wielded a Plasma Pistol, but we don't know if that is what they all use. Obviously nothing heavy.

BoB is their Easter Egg name.

Ossoonas could be their canonical tie-in to the game. Though not an accurate portrayal (or are they?). What about the Elite at the beginning of the game, who has stolen a Data pad. Proof?

Or could it just mean that some Bobs could be considered Ossona. Every Elite class has a different role. Bobs are just easter eggs, what canonical role they have, we can only specualte, base on their armour, weaponry and where they are at the time.

The fact they can dissapear might by a clue to advanced camo, or could just mean it's part of the easter egg window.

Well. I've seen BoBs carrying around fuel-rods and conc rifles.

I could possibly see that specific one being an Ossoonas(due to intelligence gathering), simply because he was actually cloaked and using spec-ops armor, where the other Bobs are simply there and go poof, and golden armor isn't stealthy :P.

That's what I think of them as.

They seem very accurate to me.

What am I proving? That's a Spec Ops elite. Not a BoB/Ossoona. The Spec Ops probably stumbled upon it and kept it.

@Cmdr
I've never seen this, the most I've ever seen a BoB with was a Repeater. Regardless I still hold my stance on them, I'm sure someone will come in with visual evidence, but that's just what I personally consider them.

I think conc rifle was start of Tip of the Spear, fuel rod is in the first area of the spire/last zone of the mission.

My comment about the cloaked with datapad is he isn't truly a bob (due to lack of ranger armor) and thus due to the datapad he holds, he could be considered an Ossoona, he matches the major traits.

A: uses active camo
B: gathers intelligence
C: Avoids conflict

I would somewhat agree, but nothing separates him from the regular Spec Ops (visually). BoBs fill that void.

  • 07.13.2011 7:31 AM PDT

Yes, there're too many numbers in my name.

I thought it was "Born on Board".

Oh, and I wouldn't associate the Elites with something as weak and gooey as a BOB. If you were to make a comparison, you might wanna take a look at the Grunts. Especially since they have the ability to go Kamikaze on your ass.

Then again, what visual clues do we have about an Ossoona? Nothing beyond active camo useage. While elites are proud, I doubt they'd outfit their stealthy intelligence gathering soldiers in bright orange armor :P.

.

"Happiness is like glass, you might not always notice it but if you change your view and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light."

BOBs Have these traits.

Golden Armor. High Ranking.
Eva armor. This makes them ready for zero g environments.
Disappears in certain times. Possibly they are on a mission and have to report in.
According to the wiki they can have silver armor.
They also use drop pods. Drop Pod
They seem to use the concussion rifle as primary weapon. Some use other weapons.
I don't think they are Ossoonas because of the high visibility they have and because of some using heavy weapons. I think they elites that are sent in to wreak havoc.
