But we cant understand them in the games before that and Halo: Reach? My freind said something about Cortana giving master chief a translator in Halo 2 but I dont think thats right.

I started up the heated debate on whether the SPARTAN-II in the cryo tube near the end of Reach is really Linda.
I created the Moa XING avatar pic.
Also I earned the All Star nameplate with this submission to Week 14 All Stars http://www.bungie.net/images/News/Inline11/bwu_0415/art/likea boss.jpg

If you read the book First Strike it explains how the Covenant-English translation was made.

Also it also explains the *CLASSIFIED* story behind Sgt. Johnson's survival of the first Halo.

"Find where the liar hides, so that I may place my boot between his gums!" - Rtas 'Vadum

During the events of First Strike (Which occurs between Halo CE and Halo 2) Cortana discovers a Covenant lexicon that could accurately translate between the Covenant languages and Human languages. This was handed to the UNSC and presumably integrated into their translation hardware/software.

They don't, they speak their own language, your armour translates on the fly.

Cortana can do it too, have a look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpUYoosJMmc

Just like the number of licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, the world may never know...except Bungie.

Translation software. Pure and simple. First Strike gives the reasoning of how Cortana found a Covenant lexicon that the UNSC used to develop the translation software.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.
