Let me start by saying that I love the Halo series (games, books, potential films, I love it all). But I think there need to be some changes to gameplay and mission structure.

I know a lot of people here hate CoD, but I don't think anyone can deny that the various campaigns (excluding CoD 3...*shudder*) have some moments of gameplay that are damn fun. And I think that Halo should borrow a couple ideas from CoD.

One of my favorite things about CoD's gameplay is that they change it up; one mission is just unloading clips amidst the chaos of urban warfare, another will be pure stealth and another will be blowing -blam!- up from an AC-130. I really think that Halo should start incorporating similar elements into the campaign. After all, the UNSC consists of many armed forces, not just a -blam!-load of infantry. I mean, I felt like Reach focused solely on the tactical side of Halo, but it just doesn't work if you're just in a "ground and pound" state throughout the entire game. For a game that centers around actual military missions (whereas the other Halos all had a sense of mystery due to the forerunners' involvement), Reach didn't have the variety in missions that should've been there.

Of course, these variations would also have to borrow another concept from CoD: switching characters in the middle of the campaign (maybe even in the middle of a mission). I think this would be essential, but don't think that I don't want SPARTAN gameplay. The Halo series is built on those "John Wayne" moments, where the SPARTANs achieve the impossible when the odds are stacked against them. These are the truly memorable moments throughout the Halo series. But I feel that if the gameplay and mission structure doesn't change, the campaigns could get stale. When I'm choosing a mission to replay in any Halo game, I usually make my choice by which level has the best environment, because the gameplay is still "go in this room, shoot everyone, go to the next room, shoot everyone," and so on and so forth.

Does anyone agree that Halo needs to change its campaign gameplay and mission structure? If you disagree, please explain why.

And if you're gonna troll, at least be funny. Most of the trolls on this forum are obvious and pathetic.

I think Reach already has those Elements.

I'll agree having a halo mission that incorporated stealth properly would be a -blam!--ton of fun.

Aka, silenced weapons (including sniper) long-time active camo, and when you kill an enemy silently or with a silenced weapon all others ONLY become alert if they see the corpse or the killing.

Can you explain? Nightfall had some stealth, but not in a "if we're seen we're done for" way, and besides a couple Falcon turret segments (Tip of the Spear and Exodus), what else are you talking about?

  • 07.12.2011 10:39 PM PDT

As interesting as nightfall is... it's not stealthy. One shot and your exposed.

  • 07.12.2011 10:42 PM PDT

Yes! I agree. Halo needs an improvement especially in"stealth."

The legend of a legend is only made stronger by the passing of his story...so feel free to talk.

In my opinion thats a fundemental strength bungie has always had. Simply stated, a spartan is the ultimate tool of war, what ever you choose to do in the mission is your choice. you use him or her as a tool of warfare. Bungie has always left the gameplay in your hands. The more your restrict a player in a level, the more that level becomes avoided. In call of duty it works because its a very one track mission style story. In the halo games your focused on 1 person. And for the most part, a spartan wasnt created for stealth. I think Bungie has found a great balance between objective force and player exploration. Short of sounding like a jerk, if you like these traits from other games, play them, or create your own game the way you want it. But please dont push to have them change something that has enthrawled its followers for over a decade. If its not broke dont fix it comes to mind

Personally I can't stand CoD's campaigns for one simple reason: after Halo's dynamic AI & dynamic fights the enemies of CoD feel rather..dull. They act like shooting practise targets!

I think I will.

Agreed, its just the way Halo is, you can use vehicles and shoot in them, there's turrets there if you want to use them. It gives you a choice. Although I think the stealth levels could be improved, maybe silencers on weapons, that would be pretty cool. But CoD w/o all those aspects would be -blam!- boring, unlike Halo, which is fine the way it is.

Well, I think what most of us are saying is that... IMPROVE THE STEALTH. I mean c'mon. Since when did the Covies have super hearing?

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

The ONLY CoD campaigns I have played more than once is MW and Black Ops. The missions in the others are a horrid ordeal of scripted events designed to wow the player and the awe wears off after 1 playthrough. Halo has the appeal of replayability because whilst you're set on a path from point A to B you're free to choose how you engage an enemy and how you reach a certain area.

Look at The Truth and Reconciliation, by far my favourite video game level ever. If done properly, you can recon the Covenant without being spotted at all up to the gravity lift. You get given multiple routes to get to an objective and every encounter is dynamic. I don't expect to be walking through a corridor and have the wall explode with some scripted guy jumping out at me EVERY TIME I play the game. I expect to see something that is going to change the experience every single time.

Halo could use some enhancements, yes. But it's fine as it is and using the rubbish that is in CoD's campaign is not going to cut it.

Didact's Reprisal -
Now is the time of our unworlding
One final effort is all that remains
And I am not afraid
We shall fulfill our promise
We fight for the grace of the Mantle
And this time none of you will be left behind

Spartans are infantry. They would essentially be a waste of resources if used in any other means. Bungie compromised this truth with Noble 6 and the Sabre, seeing how he was trained specifically in piloting it, but even so it was still slightly a waste.

Anywho, any debating seems pointless as you are talking about the Halo universe and Bungie's done with it. I'm sure 343 will like to hear about your opinion on their forums.

Since hearing is an actual variable statistic for Covenant and increases per difficulty.

10 first seconds of Nightfall and the bridge on LNoS are the best moments in the Reach campaign.

The Ban Hammer is all that was and all that will be! The Ban Hammer is time and space, life and death! The Ban Hammer can see into your mind! The Ban Hammer can see into your soouull....

Worst part ever in Reach Campaign? When you think you're going into this freaking awesome wave battle on Tip of the Spear...and then your hog blows up while jumping a bridge. +1 Fail.

would have been epic if you had to carefully and safely drive through or ride through gunning in an all out covenant bombardment and vehicle war for 2-3minutes and THEN jumped the bridge.

But no, it was just a cinematic that could have been way more awesome.

And yes, being able to only sneak at the beginning of Nightfall, and then at the Power house for 1 minute was pretty terrible recon.

Bungie kept stepping away from what Halo:CE was to see what people would like and dislike about changes. ODST was a test about firefight. Reach was a test about Armor Abilities.

Now they know what people like and enjoy, they can control the world with their Activision published game.

Head Down/ Chin Up!

It does need to be switched up a bit IMO!

Reach was basically get to the end of this level and then hit a switch! Anything original?

Halo is Halo and you can't change that.
You're probably the one of the kids who hopped on the Black Ops Bandwaggon and left Reach for dead. I play Reach because it has the Best Multiplayer. Same Goes for ALL Halo Games, best Multiplayer and best Campaign. The only reason Halo isn't as Highly regarded as it once was is because there are barely any Game Critics that are Sci-Fi fans and they are always obsessed with what's "Modern". The only reason Call of Duty switches perspective so much is to keep you from inevitably getting board.
Halo 4, 5, and 6 will kill Call Of Duty's rapidly changing menagerie of boring.
