My friend and I have been talking. And I was thinking...wouldn't one be rendered unharmed (relatively, at least compared to no AC) by a Spartan Laser blast if one was using Active Camouflage?

The AC bends light around the user to render oneself invisible. The Spartan Laser fires nothing but a concentrated beam of light. Wouldn't that mean that AC would keep you alive?

Also: He brought up the point of heat. The heat would probably kill you. But, the Master Chief fell through the Earth's Atmosphere using only a piece of Forerunner Metal for a "shield". That would generate an incredible amount of heat, and yet he remained alive. Than, there'd Doctor Halsey's plans for the Mjolnir Mark VII Armor System. In the sketches, the notes suggested that the armor could allow the wearer the ability to enter atmosphere without a drop pod, and simply use a parachute to slow themselves down. Of Course, the heat from the Laser Blast would probably still be hotter than the Re-entering Conditions, but perhaps this Mark VII could fare better?

What do you think?

cars, girls & cake all day everyday

Shut up nerds!

Also, it's probably not as much heat falling through the atmosphere as in that split second...we don't know how hot that beam is. It could be as hot as the sun.

Smoke Weed, Hail Satan

It'd be a PITA to make the laser bend in-game when it hit some active camo guy.

this. once we find that out though, we can tell. you're right though, it should hurt your spartan, but no longer be an instant kill. change my answer from #3 to #2

Expressing my strong liberal views without shame. Favorite quotes below:

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."
"One starts to live when he can live outside himself."

- Albert Einstein

There is no way that Spartan laser is made of concentrated light, even if you take the liberal interpretation of light as anything in the electromagnetic spectrum.

The Spartan Laser, at least logically, is a plasma based weapon.

The heat from the beam would overload/fry the active camo systems instantly, if not damage the suit. Then they'd get melted.

That is if the theory is even true. I mean, the splazer is a directed energy, not light based weapon...

  • 07.14.2011 9:55 PM PDT

Yeah, it seems the camo would get shorted out, and the immense force of the laser would still kill, I mean, it's not all just light, lasers have radiation and immense heat, lasers we have today can melt through thick, solid metal in seconds.

The spartan laser is Directed Energy and it fires at a speed of 299792458 meters per second.

AC either works by projecting what is behind you onto the front of you via camera's ect and projecting what is infront of you onto your back or by bending the light rays around you. However this only applies to low energy normal visible light whereas lasers are high energy light which would be a concentrated stream of high energy photons which would just hit it if it was based on the first theory or overload the second one almost intanstly. so either way you would die.

You were totally and absolutely correct in every way, I don't know why we were arguing, you're so amazing I should never have doubted you.

Concept related.

Stupid ass washing machine...

I sent a text to my cousin, who is a scientist (and a Halo gamer) and she said that in theory, yes, the light would bend, but seeing as the Splaser is actually using heat+light energy the target would still be vaporized.

This will keep me thinking everytime I pick up a Splaser though.

We are all going to get banned aren't we?

What about armor lock and an overcharged plasma pistol or another EMP device?

It's similar to reflecting lasers with mirrors--nothing is 100% efficient at deflecting light and the light/heat getting through would still be sufficient to kill the target.

"Defiant Reclaimer, he who will shatter the land and break the sky apart..."

Active camoflage bends light of wavelengths only in a set spectrum, human light vary from 360-750 nano-metres. However the incredible energy of a Spartan Laser would result in the concentration of light at far higher wavelengths with very short frequencies, i doubt that any camoflage suit could handle the frequency and wavelengths produced by so much energy.

Edit: Besides heat is light, just of the infra-red spectrum.

As some one already said, and conisdering what the name implies, AC does not bend light around it. It just copies it's surroundings(well a bit more complicated than that.)

laser vapes the target, or a near miss overloads the system..

This is Covenant tech we're talking about here, right? Then it bends light around it.

The spartan laser is a laser weapon not plasma. Humans did not have plasma weapons.

Also, the cleanest best quality mirror you can buy ( as a consumer) is only about 80% reflective, ponder this.

No telling what other experimental plasma tech humanity had over the course of this Human-Covenant war.
