I know a majority of the reasoning behind this is your own threads. You cause controversy wherever you go, what do you expect? The exception should never become the rule. Just suck it up and deal with it. The people who will report your post are the ones who won't read it anyways. The people who won't will. Simple as that. When a topic is flagged, it's just that, flagged. Not disabled, not banned, just flagged. Everyone can still read it.

I think abuse of the report button should be a bannable offense.

I've heard of people being banned for it.

They were reported while the forums went read only because people were freaking out. If you were here when that happened you would have seen that a lot of the threads on the front page had a reported OP.
Nope. It was reported before the lockdown.

Well it's actually 'disabled' in a way because you can't edit it when it becomes collapsed. Maybe there was some sort of insult in the post that you didn't really mean to say in such an insulting way...

Either way, OPs idea is still pretty terrible.

That's true, but unless if you're constantly updating your thread that shouldn't be a reason.

I feel like you complain about your threads being reported quite a bit. Did you ever think that the way you post deserves being reported?
The threads mentioned in the OP are not Goat's threads.

Derp.
And I was talking about the fact that he has complained in the past about his own threads and posts being reported, not just the OP.

No, once a post has been reported it should be like that, but after a moderator looks at it they should be able to re-expand the post.

It only takes a simple question to change everything.

You have a few options here.
A) Keep the report system, and have some posts collapsed for no reason.
B) Remove the system, and let the rule breakers run wild. Without the system, every rule breaker would have to be personally caught by a mod.
C) Improve the system in some way.
D) None of the above. (I'm not really sure how this is suppose to work.)

If the button is to stay, posters should be required to give a reason for why they are reporting.
Are you nuts? It should be made easier to use, not harder. Make it one click and lower the amount of reports it takes to put it in the queue. Report abuse can easily be ignored (or punished) and collapsed posts can be reversed. It's not even really an issue.

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

When I read the title, I though you would be suggesting we remove the report button because it is barely used, not because too many people were using it incorrectly. Needless to say I was surprised, but I still don't think it should be removed regardless of if (real or imagined) other users are specifically targeting you.

Well were not suppose to PM the mods on every little thing that goes wrong so the report button is very helpful even if sometimes abused.

Just because the report button was abused by a user doesn't mean that it should be taken out. Besides, people get banned for spamming the report button.

I think most people tend to think that the word 'report' means ' I don't agree with this'.
This is why I think we need some kind of element in the user interface which allows users to make some kind of opinionated response to a topic or post, but just not in a way which is as "involved" as making a post is.

While I don't necessarily disagree, that wouldn't stop people from reporting because they disagree with a post. I think the attitude is "I don't like what he's saying so at the very least I can contribute to it disappearing; at most I can get him warned/banned". You can't fix that , nor the lack of respect and inability to have a rational argument, with the addition of a like and/or dislike button.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

We need a like button.

An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it.

The first thread is a flame war waiting to happen, and the second thread is just complaining. I don't see any good contributing from either. That's why I think they got reported.

Whoo.

The second thread you posted didn't even have a collapsed OP ...

And the first one, well it was a very contraversial opinion and it was the Reach forum, of course it's getting collapsed.

I mean if I put up a thread in the flood saying how I think it's ok to beat my children to death don't you think it's going to get collapsed? Same thing but to a much much lesser degree.

I only picked such a extreme example because it's the first that came to mind.

Cheeto is the only one among you that doesn't suck.

You need to be disabled.

In all seriousness, requiring a reason to report a person won't change a thing. If they're going to report someone, they'll still take the time to say that their reason is because the OP is stupid.
