I'll be on my own side.

You realize that a reason would be completely redundant if it was legitimate, right? I mean, right?

Let me elaborate for you. Let's say someone reported a rickroll post. What would the reason for reporting be? "Rickroll"? Very helpful. Thank you, Count Obvious. Without that description, I wouldn't have known what to do.

Thank you, Count Obvious.

If we were to have reasons implemented, a reason still wouldn't be necessary when reporting a post, and you could limit the characters to 50 or something...I'm pretty sure a few 'alskdj' lines won't totally kill your week...

He'd have instantly stopped and knelt down, one fist on the ground, hoping to be impervious to the officer's attacks. When this would have failed and he's in the back of the police car, he'd blame his predicament on his friends for not being team players.

This, and if a ninja needed to read the description of a report to see why it was reported, the post probably didn't need to be reported in the first place.

Just put a thumbs up and thumbs down button next to the report button. It would stop people from hitting the report button because they disagree with them. For the people that just hit it to be an ass, well... there isn't much you can do about that.

You could always make it so that the report button isn't as easy to access. Like put it in the "More" drop down list next to the posters "Groups".

That would discourage reporting even more. We need more people reporting responsibly than we do people not reporting.

It would be interesting to see a pie chart showing the percentage of the community that reports rule breaking posts.

Ehh I'm not so sure. It may discourage quick reporting of trolls and flamers.

I.E Reading through a thread. Sees "You're a complete idiot." *Normally would take a quick second to report flamer* "Eh, I don't want to go through menus."

That's exactly my point. People would find it too much of a hassle and be lazy. For the people that really NEED to be reported though, people would take the time to click one menu and report them. But for something like your example, i wouldn't usually report him/her. I'd let it slide just because it doesn't really effect anything. It all really depends on how you look at it.

My example did sound better in my head...

You don't have that bad of an idea, I just prefer the button be right there at hand.

Reporting is generally most effective when you make a thread about it in a private group and request they all report the post as well.

Note that I make no representation as to the propriety of this tactic.

Also, I just noticed the OP is collapsed.

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Ironically, this OP has been reported.

I agree that the report button has seen abuse and needs revision, but I think we still need it in some form. After all, there has to be some way for users to get rid of or call attention to certain posts and threads.

What are we supposed to be discussing here?

"Nothing in the 'Verse can stop me."

I enjoy the shear irony of this.

But also, nice analogy, lets get rid of 911 because some people use it to make false reports. Make sense right since there are still police to do things. They don't need to be told about crimes over the phone, they should just figure it out on their own. Scooby Doo style.

This. I do hate it when people shut down legitimate discussions because the OP has a different point of view than the reader, and the reader automatically labels it as trolling.

The power of reporting shouldn't be taken away, it is a great power to be used with great responsibility, and we need people reporting correctly more so than we do people not reporting at all.

My point exactly. And if it's not obvious, then it generally takes less than 5 seconds to figure out if it's legit or not. The report button works fine. This is yet another thread that fails to realize that sometimes, people are the problem, not the site.

Oh well of course it works fine, I made that point here days ago. I was merely suggesting that reasons for reports wouldn't be such a bad idea.
