Did you even read the damn books? and you wonder why you get flamed for asking stupid questions, this is almost as dumb as the time you stated MC was infected by the gravemind, almost.
actually, i haven't read his post, but that theory does have something to it. in one of the books doesn't a flood spore get through johns armor before Cortana kills it with a electric shock from a shield overcharge or something like that? and the gravemind CAN talk to the chief, as he can to the infected to control them. I wouldn't be surprised if that turned out to be true.
um if the chief was infected then he would be controlled and the mind wouldn't have con through all the trouble of luring to high charity with the means of infecting him
jenkins was also "infected" but still retained control of himself. (all though i'm not sure how much, i haven't read the book, i'm going by hear-say and wiki entries here.)
Oh god, are we actually debating this?
As for your question OP, yes. It was designed to be potentially lethal. They wanted to find out who were the best of the group.
right, this has gotten a tad off topic. it's impossible to confirm a theory like that untill bungie (or 343) confirms it themselves.
Yes, the spartan training would easily kill any normal person, but they survived because of their "supergenes" as i call them.
edit:
"because the flood had just woke up after 100,000 years and was still pretty weak not to mention in feral stage"
i don't know when the chief got attacked by that spore, so i can't make any comment there.
