Agree with Sealsniper9, it's the overall story and universe. It's the level of detail for a fps that really makes Halo what it is.
Also the music cos it shows the depth to the story/universe. Example: ODST has a film noir feel while Halo CE was a single person against the world.
Halo 2 felt here and now is important (rock music/now is the moment when everything changes), while Halo 3 was this is the last chance, all or nothing epic feel. Halo Reach was a darker, more tragic feel yet bittersweet since you ultimately make it possible for the events in the Halo universe.
