Subject: Parody Threads

If this is the state of my art, then I secede.

I fail to see where this line is drawn, perhaps you could elaborate for me please?
The clever ones stay, the lame ones go.
What about when someone creates a thread to counter a thread, they go too right?
That's situational. It would 100% depend on the relevance of the counter thread.

There is something done about them, and they often get carpet banned. In other words, don't post on them and just use the report button. If a ninja doesn't respond in a few mins, just pm a ninja who is online and tell them where to find the threads.

Reporting is useless unless a moderator happens to be online at the time. The parody thread maker can simply make more parody threads, even if they all get reported enough to collapse the post. Someone posting inappropriate links can still post inappropriate links in other posts.

Actually he has a point. We don't need more ninjas, we need more people using the report button. Besides, I think we have enough ninjas as it is...

In order to nullify all infractions and incongruities within the mains, there must be more ninjas. There are simply not enough of them or their moderating time to clean up every last crumb.

They're not on all of the time, that's the problem.

But you can't rely on them always being on anyways, it is volunteer and alway it may be fun at first I imagine it would turn into a chore. They just need to have scattered schedules which won't happen. There will always be time when they are not on but neither is the majority of members, its balanced.

It helps if people actual report instead of posting in the thread.

Well see it doesn't. For reporting to work there needs to be someone online who can see the reports, and if theres someone online and they haven't seen the page of parody threads then they're probably not a very good moderator.

What you are no realizing, report and report often. Most times there is a ninja floating around regardless of if we're posting or not. Simply send a ninja a detailed message about what's going on and we can always look back to see what happened. Sadly the evidence here does not go away so even if we're a few hours late, those that want to jack-foot around will get what's coming around.

And for those that believe that there is a time and a place for parody threads, you're basically dead wrong. Entertaining as it is, it's still disrupting and gets the entire forum in trouble. Why is the Flood always looked down upon? Because they champion the behavior rather than seek to resolve it and create a community that does not mirror un-moderated forums and general asshattery. It's pretty simple, come here and have a good time by all means but do not take advantage of the leniency granted.

Well, you see, I report parody threads at all times of the day. I use Mod stalker add-on, so it usually tells me what mod is on and at what time. Mods are usually never on at times that matter the most. Either that or mods never visit the flood forum often enough.

I still hold my ground on needing more ninjas. Either more ninjas, or more active ninjas.

[*Please note that anything in my posts is likely to be filled with sarcasm, and should be taken with a pinch of salt. I tend to help people, usually*]

Far too often I see the Moderators and Admins claiming that it's us that's the problem in that we don't report often enough.

That's a really bad argument.

If a tool doesn't give us the right incentive to use it, then it is your tool's fault. Make it flashier to use, make it have positive consequences for the reporter if the post they report gets dealt with. Heck, even just have the Soul send you some flowers and chocolates through the PM system as a thanks.

I don't know, just something. I can't stand the practice of calling fault on the member when the design of a feature fails because it isn't used as intended.

As it stands, I like the report button, and I use it often, but it would appear that not enough of everyone else do considering how many "my report queue is empty" or "you guys don't hit the button enough" posts from the Mods that I've read. That's really bad. The queue should never be empty for very long. Or ever really. The phrase "Too Quiet" comes to mind.

But that's just like, my opinion, man. I hope we see some revisions to the report-button in the future, at least on the more front-end side of things. Functionality it's fine, but incentive-wise not so much.

Why should you need an excuse to use the report button? I agree that it is used as a "I disagree" button but that is why moderators are oversight upon the things that get reported. Regardless, when we can clean out our queue within a few minutes to a few hours than there is a problem.

Personally you should not get a bouquet of flowers for reporting anything offensive but rather you should take at large the respect that you are representing your community and taking a stance as to "I will not stand for this BS and I want it removed" when you report problems, problem members and over all crap posts.

Let me explain, the above seems brash but I agree with the majority that members should be able to specify what they are report and possibly why. That's a little bit hairy but ultimately a little more flexibility to the tool will help moderators and members alike.

In the end SonicJohn I mostly agree with your post but I do not believe people deserve a gold star on the forehead for reporting post. There should be no real incentive other than protecting one's own sense of community.

PM a Ninja from your timezone and link the appropriate threads if it's really bugging you - they nearly always respond to it quickly.
There isn't a lack of Ninjas - there's just a lack of people pointing stuff out for them.

A user like ExquisiteDragon knows this, you don't need to point out the obvious.

Actually he has a point. We don't need more ninjas, we need more people using the report button. Besides, I think we have enough ninjas as it is...
I believe we do. Not all ninjas are here 24/7. There should be a team large enough so there is at least one ninja on 24/7. It doesn't have to be the same person, but at least one online.

What's the point of a carpet ban anyways?

A user could innocently be replying in the thread without knowing it's a parody thread (unless explicitly stated), and get banned for something he/she didn't know about.

I don't know. If the good ones are left, then it'll turn into a competition seeing who can have their parody thread stay. Then it'll probably get even worse.

So there might be lurking ninjas everywhere.

OT: I always wonder why people post 'inb4ban' or 'obvious parody thread'.
I'd say that everyone who posts in a parody thread should receive a warning.
(since few people reply on topic without knowing that it's a parody thread)

Why do all ninjas say "hurr use report button!"

What is stopping you going to into problem forums like the reach one and simply looking at the threads and dealing with them yourself?

And far too often the offending post is simply hidden and the thread does not get locked, we need better moderation, not more of it.

Because we do not see everything you see "hur hur" which is why the report button helps. We moderate in a variety of ways but we simply cannot catch every infraction. Heck I can sit in the reach forum for two hours but I doubt you'd notice it being moderated after that - the pace of a lot of forums dictates your reality of what you think is being done or is not being done.
