Subject: An idea regarding the report button.

Obviously the parody thread spurred this, but it got me thinking about new functionality for the report button. Currently, unless a mod is online, the report button is entirely useless. It merely hides the post (which can easily be opened) until a moderator can get online and ban the user.

Anything beyond hiding the post can clearly be abused, but what if more power could be given to the report button if several posts were reported? For instance, earlier today several new users (or one new one with several alts) posted several lewd pictures of two men. One user made several threads with the OP containing the same URL. Most of these threads had the OP collapse, but he was still able to post. I think that if, say five posts of the user are collapsed and have yet to be looked at by a moderator that that user be put on suspension. Essentially they would be unable to post until a moderator could look at his posts and either clear his name or ban him.

Tl;dr: Make it so if a user has several posts reported to the point of collapsing, he is put on suspension and unable to post until a moderator can look at those reported posts.

What say you? Too easily abused?

We should know better, because we are better.

I think that is a good idea. It would help the universe forum because we have almost no mods there.

When I grow up I want to be bitter and spiteful.

"i liked the reality where everything was on fire better"
-legato on remedial chaos theory

I would report every post.

I say make it like 15 reports from 15 different accounts. I think 5 is to little and if it is a Volgur URL then many people would probably see that the person needs to be banned.

One of my ideas.

Feline Doom : Steampunk mecha anime with kitties.

Lots of possibilities. Plus, a post can get alot of reports because it is an opinion. People are like that.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

I don't like the idea of them not being able to post until a mod looks at it. If a person gets falsely reported he has to suffer. I think they should get a warning and should not be able to post for 10-20 minutes. If they do it again and get reported they run the risk of getting a lengthier ban.

I also think that users with a higher trust rating should have more report power, I.E. if more members with high trust ratings report a post then it gets collapsed faster. Now that I think about it, that's not the best idea. I'll leave it here regardless.

I think both of these are worth thinking about and debating more. I do like the first idea, having a timer on the suspension would be good.

Oh I'm not saying it wouldn't get abused. But how often do you see someone who has several posts collapsed in a few hours? Though I suppose a twenty minute time-out could work just as well. It'd discourage further posting.

I don't see why this would cause the report button to be abused any more than the report button is now.

I think we should have the option to report what they did, so it's more significant to the mods attention. For example, an inappropriate thread is much more serious than a normal troll on the Halo: Reach forum. Once you hit the "report" button it pops up a menu and the reporter clicks which crime the user committed. But that still doesn't solve the overuse of it... Dang it, this is hard to get around. They have to make it so the reporter is accountable for what they do with their power.

There are many powers in the world, for good or for evil. Some are greater than I am. Against some I have not yet been measured. But my time is coming.

Perhaps a better idea would be to have the option to hide a specific user's posts. When you click the report button, a question could pop up asking if you want to hide the user. That way you can easily avoid the serious spammers until they are dealt with.

I think this is a good idea. OPR's suggestion is also good.

While that may solve the issue for the individual, what of people that weren't subjected to this person's spamming of inappropriate posts? They get online, see an interesting sounding thread, click the link, and are subjected to lewd pictures or videos. The post wasn't collapsed yet as it was a recently posted thread despite all of the rest getting reported to the point of collapse.

If people abuse it then they will be dealt with just like they are now. Obviously the more power that reports are given, the more severe the punishment for abusing the report button should be.

I see what you mean. I just think you stop short of allowing members to impact other members' experience.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I don't like the idea of hiding a users posts.

I think simply "report and move on" is better.

I can see that being abused if many people hide a person.

I don't like the idea of being censored by everyone.

So you think people should be forced to see your posts even if they don't want to? I think that could be the perfect solution to a lot of the forums' problems. If you don't like what someone posts, then you don't have to see it anymore. Problem solved.

No, it will be abused a lot and many people would be censored.

I don't like the idea of censoring individual users posts.

How could it possibly be abused? Each individual user gets to decide what their personal experience on the website is. They don't get to hide you from other users, but only from themselves.

Although the title are not designed for responsibility, it should require X reports from legendary or above. A program could easily be written to report from 10 different accounts, and you could "suspend" anyone.

  • 07.18.2011 8:34 AM PDT

Then how 'bout this. Members who have had several of their posts reported to the point of collapse (which have yet to be reviewed by a moderator) will alter future posts until their posts are reviewed. For instance, let's I made several pornographic posts (let's say five) that all got collapsed. Now when I go to make a new thread, my post is collapsed already. But rather than saying it's been reported, perhaps it gives the report that "This user has been reported as breaking the rules in other posts. Proceed?" or something akin to that.
