Well one of the main reasons that I think that it was so popular because it was the only good Live supported game on the original xbox. It was a central place for people to socialize and play. Of course this was before XBL parties and private chat. Alot of my friends at (Elementary :P) school had xbox's and the only way to fully make use of live was to play Halo 2.
The graphics were great for it's time and it's gameplay was like nothing ever seen before (XBL/MM). I still remember the first time I played Halo 2/XBL, it was team slayer on Headlong then soon after my xbox froze...
The maps were stellar and combined the use of vehicles and CQC very well. As far as I can recall, the weapons were balanced moreso than Halo's today and I was never left with the WTFOMGUKIDDINME feeling(besides noob combo). The melee system also did not suck balls (still had it moments though).
Near the end of Halo 2's life I modded my xbox and played only fun mods (what prick would mod in MM?)I guess modding was something that people loved (flying warthog turrets and shooting clones out of a PP, or a containment race track)
Halo 3 and Reach try to severely limit stuff to do by taking out the stuff that made Halo 2 fun (super bouncing, glitching, getting out of the map). I can see disabling stuff like that in multiplayer but what harm could it pose in CG's?
The combination of awful, AWFUL maps drove me away from the newer Halo's ( I still play em). The point of a re-make is to remake it look similar to how it used to. Not throw together a map in forge and change the landscape and the little things that everyone liked about the map. It seems as if the mappers gave up halfway through and added forge mode to try and appease people.
