Subject: One thing I've never understood about Elites and the Prophets.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Why do the Elites take order from the Prophets? Honestly, I could easily snap a Prophet's neck and they're Elites. So, why do they take orders from them? This is something I've never understood. The Prophets are all weak and fragile. In terms of strength, they're practically opposites. So, I'm just confused on why the Elites take orders from them. (Prior Halo 3, of course.)

They're smart and probably were the ones who were able to weaponize scavenged forerunner tech into their weapons, they kicked the Elites' -blam!- when they fought against them before the Covenant was formed, and they supposedly know how to interpret all forerunner artifacts and speak their intentions or something like that.
The Elites are smart too, but because of their physiology and discipline in war (much like ancient Spartans), they're the commanders of the Covenant military.

They're actually based more on Fuedal Japan (The Elites that is).

"Find where the liar hides, so that I may place my boot between his gums!" - Rtas 'Vadum

The Prophets are believed to be the direct chosen ones of the Forerunner and their envoys. They knew of this "Great Journey" that the Elites didn't when they first encountered each other. They are also the only ones who knew the secrets of how to turn Forerunner technology into useful tools, and the ones who knew the schematics and workings of the Covenant's technology.

Reach is 100% perfect, and the single most competitive game since Candyland. Anyone who dares question the godly powers of Bungie is obviously just bad at Halo.

When has rule ever come down to physical strength? Do you also wonder why our President isn't an MMA fighter?

When they said the Prophets made the tech and scavenged Forerunner stuff, they implied that the Engineers really did the work while the Prophets lied, created High Charity, and made up a random religion the Elites were too dumb to realize was false.

Very true.

they did not create a random religion. up until the beginning of the human covenant war no one had any reason to doubt it. it was at that time the oracle told Truth, Regret, and Mercy that the Humans were the Reclaimers of the Forerunners. The 3 now realized that the Great Journey was a lie. They knew if this got out the covenant would fall apart so they decided to destroy the human race.

Yup, also true. Such an epic moment in Contact Harvest, a must read to really understand the story of Halo. I was just affirming what he said about the Engineers, and not the Prophets doing something with the scavenged Forerunner tech.

Of course there is reason to doubt it. There is always a reason to doubt something, especially in the case of religion.

The Covenant could not find any Forerunner remains and so jumped to the conclusion that they MUST have ascended on a "Great Journey", which somehow is supernatural in nature. Yes, the Covenant religion is that weak.

true. I should have said any strong facts to disprove it.

Yes they did create their own religion. The concept of the Great Journey existed long before the Human-Covenant war started. It is that belief in the Great Journey that formed the center of the Covenant itself.

And many had reasons to doubt it along the way and did act upon those reasons of doubt. Why else would the rank of Arbiter be converted into a position whose primary purpose is to silence anyone that would dare speak out against the Covenant or threaten its infrastructure in any way?

Hell look at Fal. He was the last Arbiter to hold the rank before it was perverted by the Prophets. He strongly did not believe in following the tenants the Prophets have set up to the point that he was marked for death and eventually killed.

Uh, do you realize how much trained security the president has the would obliterate somebody who knows MMA? The Prophets are ALL weak, so they have little protection. That's what I'm getting at.

yes they created the religion, but it was not random and it was not created for the purpose of allowing other species to blindly follow the prophets. In their minds it was very true even to the prophets.

Yes the position of Arbiter was created to silence those who threaten the covenant but that does not mean it is because they doubt the Great Journey.

I never stated that it was for the purpose of gathering blind followers. What I am pointing out, is that a random belief became the central belief for all those that would follow the Covenant such as the Elites who cast aside their own version for what the Prophets came up with. All religions spring up randomly after certain events unfold. The belief in the Great Journey was never established before hand. It came up essentially, as Anton pointed out, as a result of what the radical Prophets have observed and then coming to a random conclusion then placing their faith into that conclusion.

Furthermore I think you've misread my second and third paragraphs. It was to show you an example of how many of the races did have reason to doubt the belief in the Great Journey.

First off, the position of Arbiter was created long before the Covenant existed. It was changed to be a direct servant of the Prophets after Fal openly declared the journey to be a lie and a detriment to the culture of the Elites. That's only one among many examples of religious defiance in the Covenant before the war among others.

Second off, never did I say in that last post that the position of Arbiter was retooled to specifically and exclusively silence only problems resulting from religious dissidence. That's why I said "or threaten its infrastructure in any way"

What do you mean little protection. They keep squads of honor guards by them all the time. More protection than any president ever had. Plus their hover chairs contain weapons like fuel rod guns, lasers, etc. and shields. In terms of personal defense there are few that could beat it (except for the mc of course)

says the guy that claims the covenant [b]need[/b[ to be in every halo game because it isn't halo without them.

Anyways i understand what you are getting at SEAL. Normally the leaders are stronger than their subordinates or atleast have some means of keeping them in place.

The deal (covenant) was that the elites would protect the prophets from aliens while the prophets looked for forerunner relics of their gods (forerunners). not to mention the prophets have the dreadnought in their control.
