Subject: "Name is Blocked" (please read, Bungie)

Estis, ergo sum.

Bungie,

I cannot upload to my fileshare on Halo: Reach. I have been working on this problem for about a week now with Microsoft support. They have had me clear the cache, check privacy settings on my XBOX, delete and recover my gamertag, and even pay me to change my gamertag in an attempt to fix this problem. Nothing has worked, and they think it is on your end. Microsoft support told me to contact YOU. Except apparently, this is not an easy thing to do. Your support line is nonexistent. And that has left me flailing about aimlessly; this is one of my two last resort measures to attempt to get the help that I need.

The message, in exact wording, that I receive whenever I try to upload is as follows:

"NAME IS BLOCKED
The name of the creator of this file is not allowed on XBOX live."

What's going on? I could understand, perhaps, if I had an explicit gamertag (which I don't) or if I have ever been banned (which I haven't).

--- Viridis Wytch (formerly J Starlock)

P.S. Fellow community users, if you have any *constructive* feedback on this issue, please do share. I am at a total loss to figure this out.

EDIT: thanks to the moderator that responded. I really do appreciate your time!

Your GT is blocked by the xbox live filter.

Sorry but changing your GT is the only way to fix this.

He says he has done.
I'm not seeing anything wrong with his new one either.

Very odd.

I know. I may try to get in touch with Microsoft again and see if THEY can contact Bungie. If they can't do it, I sure don't have a chance. I was hoping the name change would fix it also, but it didn't. T_T

I know others have had this problem, but none of the threads I found stated any kind of real resolution.

My girlfriend's gamertag is the exact same way. Her gamertag is Midnight Hawk2, which is now include in the censoring list (I believe because nig is in the name which might be perceived as being short for nig.ger*). She's never received a reply so I doubt you will sadly. =\

*Sorry for bypassing the filter yo'. It's for clarity.

You may have been banned from using fileshare.

If this is hypothetically true, how in the blazes does this get fixed?

I've only uploaded four files total on Reach ever... none with explicit content. T_T If I didn't have such a clean record, I might find the "ban problem" plausible. Microsoft support did suggest that it could be a glitch (accidental ban), and then they said contact Bungie. >_<

I would think Microsoft would have a button it can push that says "oops, we banned you by mistake! We've fixed it now!"

Did you ever tag files on B.net with "Author rams___" ?

You can tag files? LOL.
I suppose I was vaguely aware of that feature, but haven't ever used it.

If there is a bright spot in this, at least I got a free name change. Except I sort of liked the one I had before. -_-

Likely he is having similar issues that other's have been having. It doesn't have anything to do with what they did, but rather Microsoft decided to further restrict certain words or saying in gamertags. Bungie likely copied this new list and imported it into Reach, thus creating this problem.

My girlfriend, for instance, has never been able to upload anything to her fileshare under her own name.

I once got banned from Live due to a glitch, it took me nearly 5 months to get unbanned. Xbox customer support are absolutely hopeless. In the end I rang Microsoft's London HQ and spoke to someone who was able to sort it for me.

Ouch. I'll keep trying. The reps I have talked to have actually all been great people. One of them gave me a good laugh and was enjoyable to speak with. It may be that ordinarily a gamertag name change would have done it, but apparently "Viridis Wytch" is as offensive as "J Starlock." I'm still not wholly convinced it is a content filter issue until I have Microsoft confirm that in some way.

I hate you unless I'm drunk.

As someone said; Change your GT.

BUT therein lies the problem; You already have changed it.

The issue with the name is trademark/copyright; Its the reason you can't put 'Epic' as the title of a video or clip because its trademarked/copyrighted by 'Epic Games'.

I think OP, you had the misfortune of changing your name, to something else that was trademarked.

I'm not sure how MS system is, but Viridis is trademarked, as well as starlock.

Now I'm not sure how vast MS's database they use to check agasint trademarks and stuff but that may be the case.

What's odd is I didn't have this problem a while ago with Starlock; when Reach first came out I was able to upload just fine with that tag. And viridis? For serious? I chose that because in botanical latin in means "green." I figured something that obscure couldn't possibly cause any issues. *sigh*

If this is the true reason, it seems rather over the top. Especially since they don't bother to make their user base aware of this.

I'm not sure if its the reason; If you weren't given any in-game notices about being banned from file-share, then it wasn't a Bungie issue, but an XBL issue.

I'm not 100% sure, but it /is/ possible that they update their lists for the trademarks every so often and this time around Starlock was added to the trademark list.

Generally speaking, if you can upload to your fileshare because of your name, its an issue with trademark/copyright or something being offensive.

The iridis thing; Google the trademark/copyright. Its for a 'green' energy company.

Again; I am not 100% sure of the reasonings, I'm just offering help.

I'll be on my own side.

Moderators here won't be able to help much; we handle forums only. But honestly, this kind of thing doesn't surprise me. In H3, content with the word "Assault" in it was censored because of the word "ass". Which is pretty retarded.

I think Bungie's censored word list is a bit over-inclusive, personally. Still, I'd rather it be there the way it is rather than not have it at all.

HALO 2 FOREVER - M.I.A.

Yes i have a Twitter and yes i voice my opinion.

Xbox live has a filter that expands the gamertag allowed content. Sometimes it works and sometimes it dont. Your gamertag has hit the filter for the content cause of the word "Wytch" and its cause the word for a female dog is the trigger.

The name "Wytch" is your downfall.

I found this OP

Basically if you're name is hitting a filter on XBL, what you can do is go into custom game, on LIVE, and 'save new varient'. Enter your name as the file name.

When you save it, if its -blam!-'d, then the problem is with your name, and no with a fileshare ban.

Actually, the page does a pretty good job of explaining. Check it out before you change your GT again.

The article notes LIVE having a filter that includes offensive names. Maybe his account (instead of just the name) is flagged by the filter as having an inappropriate name, and the free name change didn't register to it?

Estis, ergo sum.

Thanks for all the feedback so far, everyone. I'll experiment with the custom game thing. Maybe I can get another free 800 points to change my gamertag AGAIN to a DIFFERENT word that means "green" in botanical latin. Wytch shouldn't kick up filter unless they're seriously -blam!- about it. It's a variant spelling of Witch, not a female dog. And while yes, Witch is sometimes used as a snarl word, it's also a term that certain religious groups self-identify under. Hmm. If that's the trigger, I wonder if I could sue them for religious discrimination? LOL. Not worth the effort even if it is. =P

Watch yourself, green could be an offensive word to certain people. (Or at least according to LIVE's filters.)

The idiots that run the filter added "basic", "epic", "glitch", "mystery", and "puzzle" to the blacklist.

Never assume that Micro$oft is intelligent enough to not block an innocent term.
