Edit: A group that petulant and devoid of justice doesn't seem like they could advance very far as a species (imagine what their justice system and government is like if they would destroy everything because of the actions of a few)- it seems like it's more describing the Brutes than the species which created all life in the Galaxy.
I agree generally. Though it may turn out to be that it was not only the Forerunners that had a part in their decision on what action to take after being thrown out of the galaxy.
Speculation, but other races in the galaxy may have had a hand in their demise with the Forerunners as the ringleaders, inciting a sort of rebellion for whatever reason. The Prisoner says that Didact's "kind" rose up and destroyed them, however it does not rule out the possibility that they may have been the leaders with the rest of the galaxy behind them. They would still be responsible primarily, but others would take a share in the blame that the Precursors may have decided to punish as well.
Another is that they have taken shame in their creations. After being ousted by the Forerunners, they may have seen their creations for what they are: Warlike. If the Precursor are pacifists who wanted to establish a peaceful "Garden of Eden" type environment for their creations with the Mantle, only to have themselves ousted by their own creations, and then have to watch from afar as they start to slaughter each other (See the way Covenant races treated each other on first contact, and the way they treated Humanity), then the Precursors may have been disgusted with what they had done and felt the need to put an end to it.
Edit: Of course, they would not know about the Human-Covenant war, but it was just an example of what else may have been occurring in the galaxy at that time that the Precursors witnessed.
