Subject: Do you think 343 will reveal John's face in the new trilogy?

They'd better not, his face is not meant to be seen, it has been this way since the beginning, frankly I don't think showing his face has been something anyone has ever planned to do. I personally think that his face never should be seen in full. I like MagiKing's idea of a partial reveal, that's actually pretty cool, but I think revealing Chief's full face would kind of spoil the magic of the character for a lot of people.

I used to say let's see NOTHING, but I've become obsessed with this one idea now. I've posted it on Waypoint, and here at one point:

copy/pasted
Not fully revealed, but they could tease us. Perhaps during the final showdown his visor gets cracked, like the Elite in the concluding episode of the Headhunter motion comic, and we see a portion of his face (his eye, and bit of his cheek, or the edge of his nose). I think that would be pretty cool, actually. I'm one of those fans that would rather keep his appearance a secret, but something like the above would be quite effective. It'd be quite a rush to get a tiny glimpse. It's not really revealing anything because it's just an eye; an eye that could as easily belong to anyone. You'd still have to imagine what he looks like, but at the same time this revealed eye bonds the player and 'Chief on a more intimate level.

The fact we see it through a cracked visor would be pretty powerful stuff. It would add vulnerability to the character, but yet still retains that mysticism and strength about him. Perhaps it could happen as he makes the ultimate sacrifice, or just before. Seeing Cortana raise her hand to his face, his one visible eye looking back at her as she bids him farewell, would be moving stuff.

Noble Six is someone that we project ourselves onto, not Master Chief. Not anymore. After the books, and Halo 3 (which made him less of a robot), 'Chief has shed that status as a blank canvas, and he is his own character. 343 are furthering this, and humanizing him that much more. He is John, not the player. Showing his face a tiny bit brings vulnerability and emotion to the Spartan in his final hours, and that would be more powerful than showing nothing at all. Come on, seeing 'Chief with a cracked visor, his eye hinting at him in some level of pain, would break your heart, no? I can see it now. He's in a struggle with a powerful opponent, who is able to grab him by the head and head smash it against a wall, or something. His visor cracks slightly, and reveals his eye. I think my heart would skip a beat.

Don't reveal his full face, but give us a glimpse of the man underneath. Just a glimpse.

Well said. I agree 100%

We should know better, because we are better.

His face as a boy was already revealed in a comic. But no I don't think they will show his face as an adult.

Off Topic: If you didn't know whether this belongs in this forum why didn't you just read the forum rules before posting?
To be honest, he looks ugly. If that is what his face looks like, I prefer him keeping his mask on.

Since they announced that its a new trilogy maybe at the end of Halo 6 they'll show his face. Assuming that Halo 6 is the last Halo game.

If they just reveal his face, I will never buy a game that is developed by 343 Industries.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

They better not.

Jake

I had an idea last night- he's facing the leader of the new enemy, and the camera pans to a view were we can see his full body, from the back, and the enemy. The camera goes to the ground, and we see the helmet fall in front of the camera. Then we see John charge at the enemy, and we see just the back of his head?

So Noble six's death scene pretty much.

No.

I certainly hope not, because that would sort of defeat the whole purpose of him being the everyday hero. The very reason that Bungie kept his facial expression a secret is because they wanted the player to envision themselves as the Master Chief himself, and I think they did a good job at making that the reality.

They only thing is the original players are atleast 17+ and don't care about that anymore.

we know john is white, brown hair, with some facial scars, and unnaturally pale

Actually I've played halo since CE, and I just turned 14..

The point i was saying is originally his face wasn't shown because everybody was young and envisioned their own ideas of chief. Now we are all grown up and interested in the story elements, i personally couldn't care less what he looks like i just want him to stop hiding behind his helmet.

I will be in my 30s when the current trilogy is over. i don't want to be that old or older not seeing his face.

At the very end, I hope so.

John is no longer "you". He is John.

The moment they started referencing his specific history (cortana quoting halsey in Halo 3), the moment they said his actual name at the end of H3, he is no longer you, he is John-117.

The rookie and noble 6 filled the "you" gap. They plan on exploring Johns feelings more in halo4-6, so he will become more and more defined as "John" and less as "whoever is playing John".

At the end of Halo 6, which I imagine will be the end of Halo more or less, they should show his face.

You play Mass Effect right, Grey? Do you feel the same way about Tali showing her face as you would about Chief? Because it's practically the exact same thing going on between the two characters. It adds mystery to the character and that provides a whole lot of attraction, at least for me, that's part of the reason why I love those two characters so much. If you ask me, creating a mysterious character whose face is hidden from view and left a mystery, and actually stays that way for the entire run of their respective series are incredibly rare and it would be yet another positive aspect that sets Halo apart from most other series.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

Have John meld with a Forerunner, pan camera around so we can;t see their faces, then turn towards the new John/Forerunner who has a new helmet thus keeping Chief's "true" face a mystery forever.

John Carter- Xbox-Live Gold Mem.

Yeah go for it. Chief is like, the ONLY Power Ranger who hasn't taken off his helmet yet...

  • 07.22.2011 8:43 PM PDT

Honestly, I hope they do not, I like the idea of a top secret weapon that is faceless.

  • 07.22.2011 10:15 PM PDT

Showing a cracked visor would be much better than revealing his entire face.

  • 07.22.2011 10:22 PM PDT

Suck on my D-ick!

They'll probably show his face at halo 6. Just my thought, It would be a good ending since it's the last.
