"A LIE is a LIE"

- Truly intelligent and deep Black ops trailer

It's always crossed my mind, why does John carry on? He's beaten the covenant, He's finished the Flood, he has no real life and almost everyone he knew is dead or gone. Yet while stranded in space he still decides to enter cryo with the whole "wake me when you need me". I suppose this is answerable since he may think he needs to keep cortana safe.

But my biggest problem is that he keeps his cool psychologically, that is during the Original trilogy and after. That's why I think 343 should include John's past in the form of Flashbacks - shedding new light on his troubled past as a kid in military training. It would at least show john still remembers and conflicts with his past rather then having him be a robot for the next 3 Halo games like Bungie has done.

Discuss.

343i seems to be in the buisness of telling more intimate stories where we get to know the character as a human (or alien, but you get my point) so its possible.

Also, the destruction and damage surrounding the Chief in the H4 trailer--as well as the damage done to his armor--could be interpreted as a metaphor for the damage done to him psychologically. 343 did bring up the fact he was likely traumatized by his experiences in the Encyclopedia, so I can see them exploring that side f him. Why else bring up the traumatization if not to explore it?

United Armed Forces

Why does anyone stay alive?

Maybe they want to stay alive just to live, or perhaps he feels compassion and wants to help others, like Cortana.

Bungie seemed hell bent on making John seem like a faceless nobody that you can inhabit.

But the moment they had cortana say his name at the end of halo 3, they basically admitted that he is his own person, with his own history, his own story, he is not you, you simply play as him.

So hopefully 343 explores John more.

But my opinion on why he fought on after Reach: All of his friends and family just died along with his home; Halsey, and all spartans but him (or so he thinks), Reach itself. In a sense, they, heck all of humanity who had died at the hands of the covenant over the last 27 years, died so that they could discover halo. Humanity could have discovered halo at any point during the past century; its location was sitting right under their noses on reach, but no, it took the sacrifice of billions to reveal Halo. Dr. Halsey herself knew that Halo was the great turning point of the war, she even told noble team that they might all have die just for this. John feels it is his duty to all those who died to discover Halos secrets and use it to save the rest of humanity, avenge his fallen brothers and sisters, and avenge the billions of lives lost.

Yeah that's what I said in OP.

I'm actually talking about Johns mental condition
