Hello all!

My Gateway Laptop (only 1 year old) started getting sluggish on me a few months ago. So I looked up all the things that would help kick it back into shape and I thought I'd share them with the fellow Maw goers.

Ps. I'll post the full link for all of those too scared to click a named link.

*I highly reccomend this program*
I also have ZoneAlarm Firewall which is completele free and is one of the best out there. Comes with Email protection, firewall, Virus Protection monitoring, and program controll.http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10039884.html

*I highly reccomend this program*
To start it off, I use Spybot S&D for my anti-spyware program. It works great and is super thurough. It's found here http://www.safer-networking.org/

I run disk cleanup every now and then and it helps sometimes. To get to it go Start>All programs>Accessories>System tools> Disk Cleanup

I use PerfectDisk to defrag my comp and it greatly increases my speed. It's found here http://www.download.com/PerfectDisk/3000-2094_4-10349543 .html I reccomend this program over Windows Disk Defragmentor because this is WAY higher quality.

And the thing that helped the most in improving my performance was shutting down about 3/4 of the programs that ran when I started my comp. (To see all the ones you have running look at the bootom right of your screen in the system tray and click the arrow if you have more to show.)

I got rid of these by clicking Start>Run>Msconfig. Then from here I clicked on the startup tab and shut down almost all of the programs that run when my comp starts. My main reason to fix my comp was b/c the startup time was so slow (and I constantly had to start/shutdown moving between classes) so this helped so much.

I'm also told that AutoStartManager is a program that does the same thing as Msconfig but is better for those not as confident with a computer. http://members.lycos.co.uk/bleucanard/AutoStartManager.h tm

Well these are all the methods I can think of to help your Pc's performance. Feel free to post other helpful programs/methods to speeding up your computer. Hope this helped you guys :)

I would highly suggest formating your computer at least once a year to everyone....

And if your getting bad performance while gaming on a laptop you have a huge problem - laptops are not meant for gaming (and if you spend $3000 on a gaming laptop you are a retard because you can get a desktop that is much better for the same price).

I have a program called,"The Ultimate Troubleshooter." It's great for the layman. Tell's ya what all that stuff on msconfig means and what the hell to do with it. It also rates these processes on how they effect your computer. There is a free version, but I recommend the full version for the houskeeping.

Thank's for the helpfull thread Casper.

For all you techies who know Command Prompt and who want a faster computer on startup, go open the command prompt and type "start msconfig". That'll open up the microsoft startup configurer, from where you can choose which programs to boot and which not to boot. This will prevent, say, Quicktime, from loading their program on startup, increasing your loadtime.

NOTE: For advanced users only. Don't touch something you don't know about.

I'm really obsessive-compulsive when it comes to my computer. I run Disk Defrag and all that other stuff almost every day. :(

But yeah, whenever I play games, first I Ctrl+Alt+Delete and close all the unnecesarry.

I just downloaded and ran PerfectDisk, and yeah, it's a lot better than Microsoft's defragmentor.

you need air dude.............

there are many ways to improve your PCs performance. i would recomend that you get an anti spyware program and scan your PC, windows defender is still in its beta stages but its good enough for the average joew pluse its free. you alo need a firewall, norton anti virus is good enough or you could get AVG anti virus, free program.

scan your PC every now and then for viruses.
scan your PC at least every day for sypware or every few days or so.
get a firewall set up to prevent hackers, maclious software from installing on your computer
have some anti virus set up to protect you from viruses etc
defrag your computer every few months or so maybe every year
you can use disk clean up every now and then.

Disk defrag every few months or a year? Hell no. I run Disk defrag every few days because my HDD fragments so quickly.

Yeah, i've only had this PC up and running since saturday and i've already run 2 disk defrags as i have O&O defragger (legally i might add) and i run it whenever i get the chance so that the system never slows down due to fragmentation and if it does, it is never more than 5% fragmented; compared to the around 60% you'll get if it never gets defragged.

I heard that clearing your cache files helps make your internet run faster. Anyone know if this helps greatly or so small it's unnoticeable? Does it help make Halo run faster if you clear your cache?

Just wondering.
