Just a quick question, is the turret on a gauss warthog just (simply put) a miniaturized mac gun? I swear they fire and sound exactly the same...

Walk softly, and carry a big midget.

Yes they are.

  • 07.23.2011 3:54 PM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Yep. Which you'd think would be more effective than the tank, but alas.

yeh, but its not exactly common in Halo games now days, apart from in forge and a few campaign missions :(

If it was, the warthog would probably fly backwards from the force.

No. Two different concepts.

MACs are coilguns.

Gauss Cannons are railguns.

They work of 2 seperate prinicbles. Ignore everone who says there are the same.

Same basic idea. Accelerate a chunk of metal very fast using electromagnetism. Same results, just different methods.

It is, but it is laughably ineffective for some reason. It's a freakin' cannon. A cannon.

Similar result is how I'd say it but thats just because I'm very -blam!- when it comes correcting misconceptions about scientific princables.

Compared to its larger cousins, the MAC and SMAC, it's insanely weak.

What? They are not cousins at all.

1) To propel it at such a force it has to repel (As in a kickback). If we made it more powerful we could either A) Wreck the hog turret, or B) Flip the warthog over.

2) Mac and SMAC function differently, and they only are that powerful simply because they mostly operate in space. Otherwise in atmosphere every single time they fired the friction in the air would be massive and might as well be a nuclear bomb.

3) Game mechanics =/= how it would react in canon. It's weak in the game for balance, and it may actually be much stronger in the halo universe, but I don't happen to remember a situation where it has been fired in any of the books.

"There is no time for peace. No respite. No forgiveness. There is only WAR!"

both rail guns and MAC coil guns do not use conventional explosives to launch their ordnance.

in fact when fired, the most force of recoil is from the explosion of gas and fumes at the tip of the barrel.

No, didn't you ever play Tip of the Spear. The frigate fired in atmosphere and we damn well saw no nuke. And to disprove that further, in Halo 3 four macs were fired simaltaniously at full power, yet no nuke.

And rail guns and coil guns ARE THE SAME except that rail guns use 'rails' and coil guns use 'coils' to generate an electric field to propel an object.

Those Mac Cannons fired in atmosphere are fired at a low velocity simply for the fact that it intends not to set off that much friction. Every ship with a mac cannon can fire at any degree of power that they want, so the slower you fire the less friction there is. This is why they didn't set off nukes.

That and cutscenes are not 100% canon, there are some situations where in actual canon people would have died very quickly where as in a cutscene they would not (I still don't understand why chief did not get a foot in diameter hole punched through him when Guilty spark shot him, same goes for the arbiter).

Rail guns and coil guns ARE NOT THE SAME. Rail guns have 2 magnetic opposite rails that pulls the object through, the problem being that one rail is being pulled forward and the other backwards. This is a serious problem when it comes to firing heavy projectiles. You can manage to rip the rail right off if it's too heavy or it's not mounted tight enough.

Coilguns on the other hand just have one magnetic round that uses coils to pull it towards the exit. This method works perfectly for heavy rounds. They are not the same because the problems caused by one is far more risky than the other.

I think Spark just set his beam to low power.

Wouldn't explain how it blew through chief's shields like it was foil wrapped around a potato.

Bungie is ignorant of their own canon, in real life, a Mac cannon fired in atmosphere would have devastated the surrounding area.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Yeah, they are exactly a smaller version of a MAC gun.

Are you blind? Coilgun and Railgun is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT VERSION!

And, you don't see nuclear blast in Tip of the Spear because it was fired in low velocity or low charge to avoid causing massive friendly fire in the UNSC history. Same goes for Halo 3 as well, there is civilians nearby, so they fired in low charge. I don't think that you understand physics at all...

And, cutscene is not exactly 100% canon, I'm afraid. Two reasons: Game engine limitations and some people should be dying as tonyohyeah described about Guilty Spark going rampant on Master Chief at end of Halo 3.

I don't think real life =/= rule of cool in bungies' eyes...plus given the many forms of Macs we see we can't exactly use the effects of one big one to explain how all of the others would work. Remember Halo 3? Macs were used (irony being nobody complained about it then)

However in Halo 3 cut scene with MACs at Dreadnought, if it was maximum yield of 64kt, that blast would have to be same as nuclear blast and massive shockwave. So it wasn't fired in full charge, I believe.
