Subject: Groups 2.0

Groups have been deserving an update for a long while. There's no other site that has them like B.net, and they are where alot of people lurk. Infact, some people only post in private groups. I run a few groups so here's some ideas how they could be improved. They are not necessary, but these are thing I would like:

Stats: Wouldn't it be nice to track peoples stats in groups? Things like post count, ppd, length of time around, and other stuff? People are willing to make sites that display the stats, but are unable. If Bungie did something like the Reach Stats API, people could make this possible.

Rank Color: Make it so each rank can have an assigned title bar color and text. No images for the title bar since that could be abused. This would make it easier to distinguish members ranks.

Multiple Forums: Ive seen this idea before, and alot of people dont like it. However, I say make it so a group can have up to 3 forums. Start with one, unlock another at 250-500 members, and then a third at 500-1000 members. You can give each a nickname that appears up top.

Message all users: Yes, yes, this could easily be abused. However, put extreme security stuff on it. Only users with the main admin rank can use it, it can only be used 2 or 3 times a month, and if you abuse it mods can revoke the power.

Block Users: If you remove someone, and they keep rejoining, you should be able to block them from the group. This should work if you have open or closed groups.

Toggle Filter & Post limit: Make it so you can toggle the spam filter on and off. With the profanity filter, make it so you can choose what words you want censored, and what you want to replace them with. -potato!-

These are all the ones off the top of my head. If anyone else have ideas, post them below and if they're good ill add them to the OP.

Updated
Bans & Warning Upgrades: Make it so you can actually warn members. Also make they system remember any offense a user was banned or warned for in the group.

Game Integration: If Bungie games support anything like clans in Halo 2, make it so you can see your group while online and check to see whos on.

Searchbar: Searching for a specific thread can be a great pain. A search bar would make it easy and quick to find past threads.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I beat you to it like 24 hours ago.

Your thread was like exactly the same as mine.

Seeing as it is almost the exact same thread I made yesterday only with a few more smart remarks.

That's a lot of work to make fun of you. Yours was bullet points. This guy has full sentences.

Not every thing we do is to insult you ken. You just take everything seriously, and then we make fun of you. Seriously, calm down, and problems wont happen. Of course the people I talk to say your doing it on purpose to get attention.

And if you made a thread, im sorry I didnt see it, but you and 200 other people have. This is my take on what I want.

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

Get over it. Instead of trying to derail the thread just let it go.

As for the topic at hand I would like to see quite a few of these changes. Especially the stats and filters. I think with a bit more custimization group usage could grow.

  • 07.25.2011 6:16 AM PDT

Does anyone even read these?

Be quiet you, you're just being annoying now for the sake of causing a disturbance now. Besides, threads for group improvement have been created about a billion times in the past for the past few years or so.

OT: I'm pretty sure you can block users from your group, correct me if I'm wrong. Having sub forums would also be great.

  • 07.25.2011 6:23 AM PDT

Thanks Achilles

The idea with the group stats came from me talking to the guy doing the Bunge.me site (dont remember his name). He says he has no way to see into private groups, and since they are such a huge part of the site I think they should have the tracking as each account on the mains has.

With filter, another idea is when its offed show it on the mainpage like if the group is opened or not.

And groups are growing constantly, with a few upgrades they would completely soar.

@BadBaller

I dont know how to do it if you can. I just tired to look and didnt see it.

Want to know what would really help out groups. Integration with the next game they come out with. Can you imagine if they brought back a clan system and you could link your group to it? The possibilities are endless.

I had that idea a while back. Forgot about it, but yes, that would be great. You could keep track of all your B.net friends.

Stats:I've never seen things like this as being interesting enough for more than a couple of minutes before I'll forget about them forever. So compared to other ideas, I see it as a waste of time for the Web Team, to be blunt.

Rank Color:As above.

Multiple Forums:Now this is something I've always thought was a good idea. I'm sure everyone has noticed that groups will often find the need to create other groups just for the forum.

Message all users:Better idea (though I've said it before): @seventhcolumn.bungie.net email addresses with mailing lists for group members. Can you imagine the potential of that?!?

Block Users:Sounds like a good idea.

Toggle Filter & Post limit:Toggleable spam filter: disagreed. Optional profanity filter: couldn't care less.

  • 07.25.2011 6:39 AM PDT

poor ilitch

I definitely agree that there need to be some upgrades to groups in the near future. Stats and rank colors aren't really priorities (IMO) mainly because their impact on the group function is pretty minimal (not to mention the widespread use of Coup nearly makes the actual ranks themselves pointless anyways).

Multiple forums and a message all users ability would be great add-ons.

  • 07.25.2011 6:48 AM PDT

@ dazarobbo and Pr0diG

Like you said, ranks and stats aren't necessary in groups. They aren't necessary on the main forum either. They are their to help distinguish ranks, and show off what you've done. Many hardcore group users like that.

Just becuase something isn't necessary doesn't mean it shouldn't be added.

Groups would be so much better with more features.

It does when there are limited resources for that "something" to be designed, developed, and implemented.

Limited resources, okay...

The mains get updated all the time but groups barely get ANY updates.

So groups aren't important enough to be updated? They are just as much as part of the site as the main forums.

That doesn't make any sense to ignore important parts of the site, plus I am sure they could find time to work on improving features of the site, that is their job, maintaining Bungie.net and improving it.

  • 07.25.2011 7:05 AM PDT

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Limited resources as in time to write code and debug, money for employees who make the site, server(?) storage space,

Okay, but that is no excuse to ignore IMPORTANT parts of the site MANY people use.

That doesn't mean they could once in a while update groups for us.

That doesn't make any sense to say "hey, lets ignore the areas thousands of our fans use and improve the mains".

It sounds stupid and many people here seem the de-value the actual abilities of the webteam.

I'd like a method of making multiple security role changes at the same time, such as check boxes or that kind of thing.
Also, the ability to apply a security role to new users as you accept them (for groups that require membership approval).

After you quotes someone probably said, 'Let's focus on the parts of that hundreds of thousands people use."

We aren't de-valuing the ability of the web team, we are being realistic. It takes months to create/update website (right?).

I am a huge fan of groups (a groupie if you will). I want new things too. I'm patient and don't have any huge expectations so I can't be disappointed.

A more sortable member list, maybe?

Right now it's always alphabetical. Maybe you should also be able to sort the list by, say, join date, activity level, group role, etc., and maybe have a custom field or two that only admins can change the value for. That would be useful for a few reasons, I'm sure, but the first that comes to mind is doing promotions.

If they would display stats, this would be a great idea.
