Subject: Do wounds from plasma/energy weapons cauterize?

Lately, i've been woundering about what happens to all the marines that get hit, wouldn't theirn woulds just cauterize because of the super heated plasma?

It would still hurt like hell, but I don't think would do permanent damage(unless plasma hit's their vitals, of course)

What do you think?

Am I supposed to write something funny here?

Would it really hurt, 'cause it would burn the nerves?

It might, depending on how bad the wound was. But the area touching the injury might.

I checked, you don't feel third-degree burns, which plasma burns are.

EDIT: Atleast if the bolt hits you.

It would only do perminant damage in the sense that there will probably be scarring on the point of impact. And you're quite likely to lose an arm via melting (or your face, as is what happened to a Grunt in Helljumpers),

Thing I don't understand about Plasma impacts in the Halo games. If you were to shoot someone with.. Say for instance a Plasma Rifle, why does blood pour out of you? It should leave a mark, not make you bleed.

Gameplay =/= Canon.

It just shows that you hit whatever you were shooting at. Shooting at walls shows more "realistic" result.

Canon can only go so far before it hinders gameplay and makes the game not fun. And blood is fun.

I s'pose so.. But I'd rather see a Grunt's face melt off.

Would be very difficult for the engine as well as being very violent. I am under the impression Bungie doesn't want their games to be ultra violent.

It's understandable; the amount of things that would rip you apart in the Halo games is just uncountable. Any more violent, it'd become a blood thirsty masacre like the GoW games.

Heck yeah you would.
A plasma Grenade would probably just disintegrate you.
A Rocket Launcher would blast you into 593593 different pieces.
A Fuel Rod Gun would probably just leave a large pile of disfigured organs on the floor.
An Energy Sword would practically cut you like a Light Saber.

I think the point is, if Halo was real, you would NOT survive.

Well, you must also allow for ballistic and disruptive armor plates. MJOLNIR would keep you reasonably safe.

I guess so. But even so, the Halo games state that Heroic is how Halo is meant to be played which usggests that if Halo was real life, it'd be as difficult as Heroic. You'd still be incredibly vulnerable, even with MJOLNIR armour. Let's say for instance, you have a chance of survival as a Spartan, but being an Army Trooper/Marine/ODST? I think we can safely garuntee that survival is incredibly difficult, or maybe even nearly impossible.

I'm sure we can count the ways you can get horribly killed/dismembered/infected/burnt/ripped-to-shreds if we really wanted too.

Take the sniper rifle for instance:

If you were to be hit by that thing in real life...

You'd fly to pieces.

Well, a regular human would probably be blown to pieces, as for a Spartan in MJOLNIR armor, their shield would just be drained, and their armor would be gouged and torn up, possibly still alive. 14.5 x114mm round is approximately 2x more powerful as the .50 BMG (depending on powder load and bullet weight), and would be even more damaging because its a sabot round and in the future. The .50 BMG has been known to dismember people by just shooting them..

As for the plasma thing, I've thought about this as well, and just came to the conclusion that it's just for the game effect when it shows blood to show you're hurting someone, even though there would still be a little blood imo just from the wound being so massive, but most of it cauterized. And from what I've read in the books, plasma burns are extremely painful, so I don't think you feel absolutely nothing.

Yes, really

I think that plasma weapons would be ineffective against flesh.

I mean, people get 3rd degree burns on 20-50% of their body, and unless it gets infected, are back on their feet in weeks.

  • 07.26.2011 6:08 PM PDT

"I don't care if it's God's own anti-Son of a -blam!- Machine or a giant hula-hoop!"

I thought the Covenant Plasma would move through you. In "The Fall of Reach" the plasma hit, and then was moving through the ship towards the bridge. This was with metal, however. But I think the results would carry over to flesh.

Yeah, weeks..

And this isn't third degree burns we're talking here, we're talking 4th degree and beyond.. plasma weapons used by the Covenant have been known to leave gaping wounds that incinerate bone and flesh, not burn them, and in the Cole Protocol, a plasma rifle fired up close was said to melt off an insurrectionist's leg. They're very effective against flesh.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Actually, plasma would leave fourth degree burns. And yes, it would cauterize the would, would they feel it? Yes, in the less severely burned areas.

However, as stated earlier, not everything in the Halo games is canon, and wouldn't necessarily be true.
