Im sure its obvious to everyone that has been here more than a week that, our current form of punishing and getting rid of spammers is not working.

-Problems I see with the current system-

1) For the next year or two we will constantly be getting new members, therefore there will always be new people to feed the trolls. So simple ignoring trolls is impossible because new members will never catch on right away, and we are going to be getting new members for a very long time.

2) The problem isn't that the mods aren't delteing the spammers accounts, its that it is so easy for spammers to make new accounts with part of their trademark in the name. Eg. devestater 88 always has an 88 in his name or something that sounds like devestater. therefore I think that deleting there accounts is pointless.

3) like Anchros said before. we need someway for the person to lose something by creating amother account, and with the current system spammers only have to slightly change their name. spammers can still build up a reputation this way, which I think is ther main reason they stay. (to be known by a lot of people)[

-Solution ideas-

1) Im pretty confused on why anchros doesnt let the mods ban certain ip adresses. If mods could do that, then spammers would have to change homes or at least internet connections, in order to make a new account, which needless to say would work very well in getting rid of spammers. Seeing as how this idea is so obvious, im guessing there are problems with this plan that I dont see. (If so can someone fill me in on whats wrong with this plan?)

2) If we had a 5 day wait period for all new members that would sure slow down the spammers at least. New members would not likely be scared off though because they would still be able to look at the forum and see how it works before they talk on it.

3) Similar to the 2nd idea, maybe new users would be limited to the amount of posts they could create and resond to per day. here an idea of how it would work...

- New users (first week) can only create 1 new post per day, and can only respond three times a day to posts other than their own. They would be alowed to resond to there own posts as much as they want because there first post would likely be "hi im new!" and then they would likely want to hi to everyone who responds to their post, and i think that is exceptable behavior of a newb. then they could use there three responses per day to post their opinions about other peoples topics and get a taste of the community

-also for all the non new members, they could be not allowed to post anything that has more than 20% mispelled words. that way spammers would not be able to just type in a bunch of letters and post. old users could also have a post and resonse limit. except it would be closer to 5 new posts per day, and like a 40 responses limit per day

4) we could get an excessively high number of moderators so that mods outnumber all other users 3 to 1. and then everyone would talk like gramatically correct british people. (ok myabe not that much more mods but you get the point.) and there are also still a few very responsable members left that can be turned into mods. at least i think so.

feel free to make your own suggestions on how to fix this problem, say what suggestions you like, or say what suggestion you think are good but are unfair in certain areas.

I know that alot of these ideas are based on other peoples ideas from that post that was here a few months ago, but this has the solution ideas in one post instead of broken up along 12 pages

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

More mods = Mod Rip-Saw and Mod Banshee Barron.... and possibly, Mod Me (but that probably won't happen) = better forums.

(Sorry, I was one of those who thought that they would, for sure, get to be mods when the new mods were picked.... needless to say (although I'm going to say it anyway), I was disappointed that they weren't picked).

Suggestions 2 & 3 are REALLY unfair!!! lol

Suggestion 1 is flawed as spammers normally know how to change their ip - not very hard, and will always use mates pcs etc.

Suggestion 4 would spoil the whole ' 7' thing so can't be done lol. Although it would be nice having them more spread out along the time zones.

I recall Ripsaw being occasionally sarcastic towards people that act stupid, but thats alot nicer than most of us would treat them. And yea I also agree about banshee, I never recall him doing anything even slightly wrong. But maybe he was offered mod status but refused. I serious doubt that though.

What about Obbi? never heard a bad word from her and she's been here ages... Anyway.. I doubt that we should be discussing this because it's not really for us to discuss :)

There is a thread that is somewhat similar to this one. Click here .

Shai, Bungie picked the people they did because they thought they were doing the best for the forums. Now, I don't know why Bungie didn't pick them Rip Saw and Barron, but I bet there were reasons for not. Just because were not Mods doesn't mean we still can't help out the community.

I think the solution to the spam is these tools the Mods get, which may come around when the 7th column is down.

Edit:4) we could get an excessively high number of moderators so that mods outnumber all other users 3 to 1. and then everyone would talk like gramatically correct british people. (ok myabe not that much more mods but you get the point.) and there are also still a few very responsable members left that can be turned into mods. at least i think so.

3 to 1? There would be too many so called "Mods" running around the forums then. Even if it was 1 to 3, that's still to big of a number. If they actually incresed the number of mods I think Bungie would only go as far as 50. That is still almost too big of a number though.

WHATS WRONG WITH OBBI?! first of all obbie origonally came to bungie.net in order to spam our forums. Also obbiquite is an 18 year old man pretending to be a woman! I dont think people like that should even be on here. Obviously he is not spamming the place but he still pretends to be a woman which I find disturbing.

Exactly . The only mod in GMT I think is Reginko...

Oh I just remembered something, banned accounts dont get to use the halo 2 feutures this site will have. If they make a new on I guess that is fine but if they spam no halo 2 for them. Simple as that.

Did you even read my post? My posts suggests multiple solutions, and I did read Ripsaws thing and I said why I thought that plan was flawed.

I was trying to get the focus on the "tools". Bungie and the Mods seem to be pretty confident that they will work.

The answer to that, would be, yes. Every word if you wanted to know that as well.

A spellchecker would help in some cases, although aside from spam, posts usually get the message across.

Banning IPs can be a problem due to some of them being dynamic, which means a spammer can reset his computer, making a new connection and thus being able to come back and post a load of crap. Blanket bans don't work, either, as you could end up banning an entire range of people using the same ISP, and Bungie wouldn't want an entire group of people to suffer for the actions of one stupid troller.

My money is that the risk of losing your B.net Halo 2 functions is going to put off the 'light' spammers, i.e. those that might just do it once for a laugh. H2 is going to be THE XBL game of the current generation, and losing all of your clan details and stats won't be too tempting a prospect for many contemplating a spamfest.

As for the 'hardcore', such as davester88, until whatever Achronos has in the works for dealing with super-spammers like him surfaces, we'll just have to put up with him. I'm sure his day will come soon, though. Very soon. When he least expects it. *evil laugh*

I think more global mods would be useful. We have Americans, a Brit, and an Australian on the modding team, but what about the rest of the world (English-speaking)?

spammers spam because they crave attetion, thus their parents are to lazy to set up XBL for them, so they wont lose anything more other than their account name once XBL comes out. also if they did have XBL they wouldn't use that account for spamming, or they wouldn't give the XBL gamer tag to bungie.

Did the mods get ban powers yet? last I heard, they couldn't ban.

I'd check our rules on using the n-word.
