what does that mean? is that the processing speed? I was looking at a motherboard in the paper and it said "2MB L2 cache 3.20GHz, 800 MHz, so is the 3.20GHz processing speed or the 800MHz?

no 800mhz fsb is the speed of the front side bus. It has nothing to do with the speed of hte processor itself, other than how fast it can carry info. The first thing you do when you buy a motherboard is make sure its the same socket. You have to figure out which processor you have, and from there I can tell you what socket it is. Give me the exact model. ex AMD 64 4000+, intel pentium 4 640 ect....

Also is the computer manufactured? (dell, sony, hp, compaq ect...). If so, you cant upgrade the motherboard. (well you kinda can, but you have to send your computer in to the manufacturer and they will put a new one in). Also, they only use their motherboards most of the time. You cant just pick any random motherboard because it just wont work.

Yeah it's a gateway desktop, I don't know how to figure out what type my motherboard is.

It's an Intel Pentium 4 3 GHz Processor

if you don't know what it means, don't worry about it. It's just the rate the processor communicates with the motherboard.

FSB stands for Front side bus, which is what the CPU uses to communicate with memory and the other components on the motherboard. 800 is fine, 1000 is better if you can get it.

well then you cant buy a new motherboard unless its through gateway. Its pointless, why would you want a new motherboard anyway unless its having problems?

I was just looking and I wondered what it meant. Also, I was getting ideas for my brother's pc, his is windows 95, so it's very old.

Maybe just a new comp.

haha yea definately. If your still running windows 95 I'd definately say get a new computer. You can get cheap emachines packages for like $350. They may not be the best, but they sure will be a hell of alot better.

FSB...it choked off the Pentium 4 and it hinders the Xeon. AMD got it right with HyperTransport [no FSB, 2GHz connection to components].

A new comp for what? If it's for gaming, you'll want to spend a tad more than $350. I'd say that you can build a decent gaming machine for somewhere in the price range of $600-700.

It's sort of a bad time, though. With Intel's Conroe already being previewed [6 months in advance...*smacks head against keyboard*] and AMD's socket AM2 on the ticket, you're better off waiting a bit, even if you want the technology out now. Prices on AMD's socket 939 and Intel's LGA775 will drop immensely with the release of the next-generation of processors. In addition, Vista is coming to market, and you may want to wait to see its system requirements written in stone.

well if you want a gaming machine thats actually decent you'l have to spend about $1000. I was saying you can get a really cheap one for $350 if your on a really tight budget.

well, the price for a gaming machine that will last for a few years would be up in the $2000 - $3000 range. BUT that is for the best hardware *dual core, newest gpx, best mobo, largest hd, vista, ext...*

a larg hd doesnt make it better, in fact it makes it slower in most cases. Longer search times. Its better to find one with a higher mb cache, and high rpm's. WD raptors are great drives, 16mb cache and 10,000rpm, very fast.

My gateway is decent, it only cost $800. It's not top end but it works very great for me. I'm trying to get my brother's old computer better.
