"It will not be we who reach Alpha Centauri, and the other nearby stars, it will be a species very like us, but with more of our strengths and fewer of our weaknesses, more confident, far-seeing, capable, and prudent. For all our failings, despite our limitations and fallibilities, we humans are capable of greatness."-Carl Sagan

Great. :(
So the ODST are going to become the new mandalorians, the Sangheili are going to be marginalised and caricatured as a bunch of ignorant peasants, fighting amongst themselves for teh lulzzorz... Halsey is going to be demonised, the spartans and Mendes are going to have a major character derailment "just because hating halsey adds drama" (seriously, both the spartans and Mendes have previously all been in favour of halsey's actions, it's Halsey herself that has doubts). Oni is going to be acting all pointlessly dickish for the sake of it (at least that is vaguely canon) and screwing over mankinds best hope at an alliance with somebody useful....
Dammit Traviss, why must you mess with everything I like?
Is it not enough that you lobotomised the clones and jedi throughout several star wars books?
But no, now Halo is going to be battered even further with the Idiot Stick....
:(
This is so true...and if you haven't watched the Comic-Con Halo Panel 2010 video, I suggest you do that and you'll understand how true it is. I was bored last night browsing Halo Waypoint and watching random videos and came across the Halo Panel one... Greg Bear is there, along with Karen Traviss and they discuss their books a little and what motivates them to write... Karen Travis is ALL ABOUT drama and conflict within characters. She talks about how she doesn't like to write about characters that are normal, she likes the problem-characters, and this new info on the book sounds like she's created a lot of pointless drama.
What's funny is that she talks about how she doesn't like to write about things if she knows everything about it. She likes to write stories without being an expert on the subject because she feels it brings a "fresh" feeling to the book. Then immediately after, Peter David, who was in charge of the Halo comics, gave a lengthy explanation about how you DO need to study the entire Halo universe before attempting any new projects because if you don't, the fans that know the subject better than you will be sure to let you know about the mistakes you made.
I thought that was funny...how Karen likes not knowing about the topic before writing, and then Peter mentions how you shouldn't start a Halo project before becoming an expert on the books, the games, everything.
Anyway...
So we're just supposed to ignore the fact that these people have had some serious -blam!- happen to them and expect them fully to be completely badass all the time.
Right.......
Look, I've read all of her Gears of War books. She stays expertly true to all of the characters involved. If she was melodramatic, I would hate her for it, but as it is, she NEVER goes overboard with the drama, she merely analyzes the characters and asks herself "what would this person do or how would he/she react to this scenario" and then does it.
I've rarely seen an author who can create characters so complex yet true to their universe. Perhaps you've never read any of her books, but if you have, and you still say that she's overly dramatic, then its clear the only thing you're interested in is the action.
I agree, Karen made me care about the characters in Gears Of War and that was a hard thing to do.
I want her to get in to the characters like she did with Marcus and Dom because in Halo the characters are what make the story as good as it is.
