Great. :(

So the ODST are going to become the new mandalorians, the Sangheili are going to be marginalised and caricatured as a bunch of ignorant peasants, fighting amongst themselves for teh lulzzorz... Halsey is going to be demonised, the spartans and Mendes are going to have a major character derailment "just because hating halsey adds drama" (seriously, both the spartans and Mendes have previously all been in favour of halsey's actions, it's Halsey herself that has doubts). Oni is going to be acting all pointlessly dickish for the sake of it (at least that is vaguely canon) and screwing over mankinds best hope at an alliance with somebody useful....

Dammit Traviss, why must you mess with everything I like?
Is it not enough that you lobotomised the clones and jedi throughout several star wars books?
But no, now Halo is going to be battered even further with the Idiot Stick....

:(

This is so true...and if you haven't watched the Comic-Con Halo Panel 2010 video, I suggest you do that and you'll understand how true it is. I was bored last night browsing Halo Waypoint and watching random videos and came across the Halo Panel one... Greg Bear is there, along with Karen Traviss and they discuss their books a little and what motivates them to write... Karen Travis is ALL ABOUT drama and conflict within characters. She talks about how she doesn't like to write about characters that are normal, she likes the problem-characters, and this new info on the book sounds like she's created a lot of pointless drama.

What's funny is that she talks about how she doesn't like to write about things if she knows everything about it. She likes to write stories without being an expert on the subject because she feels it brings a "fresh" feeling to the book. Then immediately after, Peter David, who was in charge of the Halo comics, gave a lengthy explanation about how you DO need to study the entire Halo universe before attempting any new projects because if you don't, the fans that know the subject better than you will be sure to let you know about the mistakes you made.

I thought that was funny...how Karen likes not knowing about the topic before writing, and then Peter mentions how you shouldn't start a Halo project before becoming an expert on the books, the games, everything.

Anyway...

So we're just supposed to ignore the fact that these people have had some serious -blam!- happen to them and expect them fully to be completely badass all the time.

Right.......

Look, I've read all of her Gears of War books. She stays expertly true to all of the characters involved. If she was melodramatic, I would hate her for it, but as it is, she NEVER goes overboard with the drama, she merely analyzes the characters and asks herself "what would this person do or how would he/she react to this scenario" and then does it.

I've rarely seen an author who can create characters so complex yet true to their universe. Perhaps you've never read any of her books, but if you have, and you still say that she's overly dramatic, then its clear the only thing you're interested in is the action.

I agree, Karen made me care about the characters in Gears Of War and that was a hard thing to do.

I want her to get in to the characters like she did with Marcus and Dom because in Halo the characters are what make the story as good as it is.

Can't wait to see her getting in Dom's head in GOW3 dealing with his wife death

It is the translator that is low on their scale, not humanity as a whole.

But doesn't the guy speak Sangheilian himself without the need for a translator? I thought that was why they called him an idiot child, because he could not speak it as well as an adult Sangheili could.

Posted by: anton1792
I also don't get the whole "Humans are so low in social class it would be laughable to harm them"

I don't know where you got this. I think you must of misinterpret their words. They weren't talking about humanity as a whole. Just Evan Phillips. He is so small, so... unique that if you harmed him you might as well be assaulting a child.

I don't see why they would apply this double standard at all. He is a Human most likely of average Human stature.

I think it is obvious now that 343 Industries are not fond of the idea of the Sangheili having any sort of respect for Humans. Conversations from the Universe may as well be retconned now as far as I am concerned.
You need to listen to the podcast again because his stature is only one of many things they have come to this conclusion about him. It's how he acts and how he talks. He isn't like a marine or ODST. He isn't like that at all. It's because he's so unlike that they believe even harming him can be compared to harming a child.

There is a possibility that some Sangheili commanders still hate Humanity.Remember the Imperial commander who was still planning to beat the Humans after dealing with the Brutes.

no. and if you are talking about "the return" he wasn't going to do anything but look for the forerunner relic.

Peter David

He slaughtered the Star Trek: TNG continuity. I'm seriously wondering if any of his books are taken as canon. As such: I respect hardly any of his literary works, no matter how much he's studied them.

To note for you, no star trek book is actually considered canon.

The Star Trek canon is the TV shows, and the movies (bar JJ I believe, not sure.)

I don't understand how they could consider him "so far below them in social class" due to the way he acts. He is a Human, not a Sangheili. He is not a part of their social classification. Also, this is the Human Ambassador, a damned representative of Humanity. You do not just slander such a person like that. The Sangheili are really being portrayed as ignorant pigs here, more so than their usual hubris, which I actually expected to get better post Halo 3, not bloody worse.

And calling him an idiot child because he cannot speak a friggin alien language to its fullest capacity is just plain petty, pure and simple. I thought the Elites were supposed to be above such pettiness.

This book makes me extremely pessimistic about post Halo 3 now.

Uh... have you listened to the podcast? Cause you might of missed the fact he speaks fluent sangheili, just he talks in a eccentric sort of way. Secondly, I made no reference to his social class. Obviously he is not part of it. He is short and has a child like curiosity. Travis described him touching random things, inspecting everything, ect. You know. Like a child. Harm him and the elites will say "Dick move." since they say harming him is like beating up a child." Doesn't know any better and likely didn't mean to do anything wrong. Seriously, listen to the podcast. Makes much more sense.

Also he's a huge hit on Sangheilios. As far as we know he's chill with the Sangheili.

It sounds to me like you expect every single Elite to act the same. There are jackasses in Humanity, there are sure to be plenty in every species. Just because a couple of Elites are being dicks doesn't mean their entire race is.

Not to start anything, but from what I've read it's like you expect every Elite to have the same views of honor and be some kind of saint.

When I heard she was writing Gears 3, at first I was like

But then I remembered that this was the end of the series, which usually involves a lot of death. Imagining all of my favorite characters dying--with the care and grace in presentation only Karren Traviss could provide--I was like

The same legitimate emotions brought forth by the Gears books, and will obviously be brought forth by Gears 3, will be a welcome sight for Halo.

The new movie is canon, but its set in an alternate reality (all of which you know Trek to be still exists, just treat this as a fresh start, irrelevant to old Trek).

And I somehow doubt the guy whose being called this generation's Spielberg is an imbecile. I saw nothing wrong with the movie; was was also ungodly about it that pisses so many people off?

I liked it, though I agree with my brother that the Enterprise being handed off to fresh graduates is odd.

My comment was simply in general, that's how I heard it heh. Star Trek is a weird ass canon to deal with.

The information from the podcast was definitely interesting and I can't wait to read the book. I do think, though, that we shouldn't jump to conclusions on the post-Halo 3 universe. We should wait until we get the book and read it for ourselves before becoming pessimistic. I say this because Karen Traviss cannot possibly convey all of the information, conversations, or contexts on these topics that she is merely scratching the surface of. When the book is released, we will be able to dive a lot deeper into the things such as ONI's desire to keep the Sangheili fractured.

Sounds like this book is full of unlikable characters.

And Mendez suddenly hating Halsey? What? Why? Sure, both Halsey and he always had doubts about the program they were working on...but hate?

I dont know, this information doesn't make me jump around screaming and yelling how awesome this is going to be.
I'm looking out for Primordium...this one, well....maybe I'll give it benefit of doubt but its definatly not a day 1 buy for me.

Mendez always respected Halsey, yeah, the same way people respect Hitler for the political and military accomplishments he achieved. Doesn't mean we have to like him.

Time spent in the Dyson Sphere--basically seclusion--will inevitably lead to characters mulling things over with nothing else to do. This can stir up some deeply burried resentments and feelings that on a normal day never appear to exist.

But in short order, hotshot has it right: "Its called character devolopment."
