I might even get banned just for writing this. Which would be a real shame, because I just wrote this great piece on the Xbox 360 Achievement system. And I'd hate to see it zapped because of a totally unrelated post.

Look, when you say things like this, you make the mods look ruthless, and yourself look stupid. Just because a thread is asking if something could be done about the way things are currently run does not mean people will flip out. It's the exact idea of improvements. There's always room for it...

I can't really see the idea taking fruition. The problem is that you are asking the moderators to take their time to evaluate how a member is doing rather than moderate the forums, which causes problems. Usually those who say "I wanna be a mod" are more interested in the custom avatar and white text than actually doing anything that involves responsibility. You're going to find better candidates who say "I wanna help out to make the Bungie.net community as great as it can be." Of course, you will find very few people who actually say that, since they usually spend more time doing and less time talking.

Anyone can act like a good candidate when asked to do a test. Only a truly good candidate will not need to go to the group to prove they are one.

First of all no one gets insulted about someone wanting to be a moderator. However it gives people the asumption that it is for all the wrong reasons. First of all Moderators are not just a mere status indicator. Moderators are no pay volunteers that constantly monitor the website for would be miss-use and abuse and correct it. That is all, some poeple get mad when moderators take action for doing thier volunteer job.

The Bottom Line Is that people who want to be a moderator has to be some one who wants to help. Not someone looking for Bragging rights. Unfortunatly asking to be a moderator is indicating that their are eyeing the larger than life status rather than trying to be a contributing member of the comunity when there isn't really any benifits for being a moderator. Just some made up social status.

Mods don't get insulted when people ask how to become a moderator.

It's part of the game.

We were asked to volunteer some of our time to moderate the forums. Each of us. None of us came to Bungie.net, and posted "I WANT TO BE A MODERATOR PLZ." Nobody that has done so has ever become a moderator, and in all likelihood will never get the opportunity.

"If you have to ask, you'll never know."

Essentially, doesn't Bungie ask you to be a moderator. That makes asking to be one sort of pointless really.

I know the thread you're talking about and the kid had it coming. A lot of his nasty posts were deleted when he was blacklisted.

Just curious, especially since Guardian Hunter didn't reply, did anyone get the joke of making Moderator Forum Tactics both in name and description sound conspicuously like Mjolnir Battle Tactics.

Eh...I thought it was cute.

Does it really sound like that? I would have never guessed. Good job on that joke. Not the funniest I've ever seen, but one of the more elusive ones, since I didn't see it there until you said something.

Usually the person who asks and says "I need to be a mod, please make me a mod!" aren't really suited for the job. Bad grammar, horrible spelling, no concept of the rules (they post the "I want to be a moderator" thread in Zanzibar, for example).

And as I don't always say:

You don't ask to be in mod club. Mod club asks to be in you.

Not so much "eat your brains" as "chain you to a computer which has access only to Bungie.net for the rest of your days".

No no, it's a joke. Like "In Soviet Russia, road forks you." It's all metaphorical. It doesn't actually happen, it just feels like it may as well be.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

There is a reason I am user ID 1 and my account creation date is before this site came online.

To the original poster, when I first started here at B.net many many moons ago, I posed a mod-related question, such as "how are mod's selected?" Because I was curious to know more about the people that actually have a commitement to be on b.net a lot, compared to me who is here because I come of free choice. But after posing the question, I got several responses, some helpful, but mostly hindersome. Some hindersome responses even came from mods themselves. Although, I should say that their responses were in good fun, they definitely did not answer my question, and I did feel rather jaded about it till Steve finally gave me a straight answer. Plus, since I asked a question about the mods, many people assumed that I was trying to become a mod myself, and I got the same typical answer as stated before, "since you asked, you can never become a mod now". (For the record, I've never said that I wanted to be a mod). However, I can understand this policy even if it does sound a little rude. Those who aggressively seek mod-ship are probably the ones who would be more likely to abuse their powers once given them. However, of the mods, I think the biggest glimer of restraint is in the form of Reiginko, who actually saw "the promised land" and was able to go back to being a normal member. That's impressive in my opinion.

Just my couple thoughts on the subject.
