Halo 3: Collapse
Chapter 20, Revelations, is up (update 11-14-10)

The bodies on the floor were dead Combat forms, Elites, and Grunts. Elites are compatible Flood hosts and in Halo 2 we learn that infection forms can reanimate "dead" Combat forms, but Grunts (as far as I know) are incompatible with the flood.

Why, exactly, were the Flood gathering bodies? Ideas, please.

Food? Maybe getting them out of htey way for when they rot. Or to fuel whatever grows on the walls.

Dude, it would be so cool if we had these pregnant sentinels that were, like, all flaming and shot out baby flaming sentinels that would be all "YARRRGH!" then they'd be like, "WHAAAAR" when they shoot.

That'd be sweet.

I read the halo books about 2 years ago ... so I don't really remember everything clearly.... but something tells me the grunts aren't the exploding flood (or the "carrier" form iirc). Just because the size is a match doesn't mean they are the same.

The books said the Grunts and Jackals were the popcorn flood. Humans and elites were the only ones suitable for combat. And i think the bodies were there so flood could infct them l8er after we kill everything.

But grunts and jackals are more numberous than Elites, so why are there more Elite combat forms than carrier forms in the game?

Because the weaker ones like Grunts and Jackals are weaker and are so mangled after bieng killed that some are unsuited for mutation.

You guys didn't know the poppy flood were grunts? And your only figuring that out NOW???
Thats terrible, I'm serious.
For god's sake just look at the legs!

Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

if anything i think the reason they gather bodies has something do do with uses for the flesh. if a suitable host is damaged beyond use for infestation that doesn't necessarily mean that the flesh is uselss. remember keyes after he was infected? he was huge, gotta wonder were the excess tissue came from.

The Carrier forms aren't just Grunts. All combat forms eventually become the Carrier forms when they become too damaged. This is all according to the art of halo book. There are sketches of other versions of the Carrier forms (human and elite). We only see one type in the game though... probably just because they didn't want to have several different models for essentially the same thing...

As to the original question, they were probably saving them up to create a Gravemind. It says in the art of halo book that the Gravemind is made out of the bodies of it's fallen enemies... The Keyes blob that we see in Halo probably wasn't only Keyes.. There might have been bits of other dead bodies in there too. Maybe it was on it's way to becoming a gravemind... but thats just my opinion...

That's right. look below the face. You'll see three, count it THREE sets of legs! Slightly disturbing...

Imagine if they could infect a hunter. Or if they infected another spartan with the MJOLNIR 5 armor. That would be pretty hard to kill.
