Words.
It sounds like you have a perfectly easy time ignoring the spam that comes into the forum, so I don't know why you're arguing so strongly for having mods on 24/7 to stop the spam when it happens. To begin here, you're making the assumption that I see those things as worthy of being reported and simply not. There might be a small amount of posts/threads meeting that, but by and large it is not. I don't care enough to report mild flaming or stepping over the line into politics or religion because I don't see it as disruptive enough to warrant action in the majority of cases. Good threads stay good, and straying over the line can make for more entertaining discussion and reading material. If anything, reporting would be more disruptive for me and numerous other users by removing decent interaction.
For the individual threads that probably break the rules and could be reported there isn't any point. I can simply ignore them, and reporting them isn't going to change anything. Another user will be along to fill that gap, you're not going to stop people being bad members and stepping over the line by waving about an iron fist.
Perhaps I should make this clearer: This isn't me taking issue with the little individual things slipping through the cracks, that is something which is probably inevitable. You cant get everything, some stuff will be missed. This is an issue very squarely aimed at the mass disruptions, and here's the thing: I can be great at avoiding the one or two rule breaking threads on a page, there is still 20+ other threads which are within the rules (though that of course is no indication of quality so there might still not be any good threads, but cant control that) When 20/25 of the threads are all stupid parodies or shock sites, or when every thread has someone spamming shock sites and derailing the entire thread I can't simply block that out because there is nothing else to see.
You're never going to have 24/7 coverage with unpaid moderators, no matter how many you add (and the closer you get to 24/7 coverage, the amount of butting heads increases exponentially, until no one can be bothered moderating because during peak hours every time you try to close a thread or ban someone, someone else will have already done it). And honestly, you don't need 24/7 coverage. The report button is there so you can tell the moderators someone is breaking the rules, and then they get dealt with accordingly (and within 24 hours almost 100% of the time).
I'll try and make this a little clearer too. This isn't an issue of coverage every single second of the day. That isn't something you can assure. Things happen, people are busy. But that is why we have more than one moderator per timezone, so that when one is busy others are hopefully there. To put the issue in fairly blunt terms, that doesn't happen for the Asia-Pacific. There are exactly 2 moderators based in a region stretching from Europe to the West Coast of the US. Even with overlap from early morning/late night moderators in other areas there is a tiny amount of coverage, and from my experience it frequently shows. As above it probably isn't an issue that would be easily solved, as there is a smaller pool of people based in that area and an even smaller pool whos probably at all considered remotely viable, but that doesn't change it being an issue.

That's like saying you shouldn't come to Bungie.net if you don't like every game they've ever made. They aren't payed to do this. They aren't forced to do anything. Get over it.
Can I also just point out what an utterly stupid argument this is? If you're doing a bad job (Not saying they are) being a volunteer really doesn't make much difference. Don't put your name down if you cant do a good job, and if you no longer can do a good job then let someone else sign up. If the RFS comes to my house and just ignores the bushfire burning it down I don't shrug and say 'well they're volunteers so thats ok' I'll point out that they're supposed to be stopping fires not ignoring them.
