It sounds like you have a perfectly easy time ignoring the spam that comes into the forum, so I don't know why you're arguing so strongly for having mods on 24/7 to stop the spam when it happens. This is a joke right?
You're never going to have 24/7 coverage with unpaid moderators, no matter how many you addYou don't need 24/7 coverage, no one's asking for 24/7 coverage. Nerd even made it pretty clear he was ruling out 24/7 coverage. The only person here talking about 24/7 anything is you.
And now, also, me. 24/7 coverage is pretty difficult (far from impossible) to achieve. The appearance of 24/7 coverage, on the other hand (which is all you really need), is easy to attain.
and the closer you get to 24/7 coverage, the amount of butting heads increases exponentially, until no one can be bothered moderating because during peak hours every time you try to close a thread or ban someone, someone else will have already done itThis isn't a reason to not increase the numbers of moderators. This is a reason to get less -blam!- tools.
The report buttonThe report button sucks. Sad, but true.
You have surprisingly less knowledge of the tool than you think if that's your opinion of it.Hence proving the point that the tool sucks. If the users think the tool sucks, the problem is not with the users, it's with the tool and those unable to see its failings and continuing to preach it as some sort of panacea. The tool isn't dependent on some behind-the-curtain look-not-lest-ye-be-smited magic beyond the capabilities of mere users, it's entirely dependent on users using it, and using it en masse. We don't, we think it's -blam!-, and the only stuff it catches are the obvious shock site links, which is all report tools are good for. Report tools are not at all useful for moderation. Moderators are.
Sometimes i wonder what planet some of you live on. Twenty four hour response times? Give over, son.
