Ok, my Halo disc wont be read. And everything else is being read. Grr.

So, ive checked for scratches, and theres none to be seen, and i gave it a light wipe with a cloth.

Still no results.

And i was able to play before, it worked fine, just put it in and off it went. But now it wont. Grr.

Help? Please?

Try this.

click start, run and copy/paste this in. (only if you have it saved in the program files directory). Keep the disc in the cd rom
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo\halo.exe

edit - does it say "please insert cd" or something like that? if it does that then the above wont work. Its just a link to the exe file but if might work. you never know

Also make sure auto run is enabled. Click on my computer, and right click on the drive that your using (make sure halo isnt in it). Then go to properties, and click on the autoplay tab and enable it.

is it a copied/burned disc, or the actual halo disc that you bought?

Can you read the content in the Windows Explorer? If so, then you most probably have a home made copy.

In that case, go to the store and actually buy the game.

Well, its a bought copy, from GAME, for 20 quid.

Well, i went out today, bought 4 new games, and whoop de doo, now NONE of them work.

But DVD's and music CD's are still being read.

And i only buy my PC games, rip's are always messy.

Well, i cleaned both sides again, didnt work. Cleaned both sides of my new games, none of them worked.

So, things ive noticed when i put a game in.

My Computer completely freezes, the window itself, not every program and stuff.
The disc drive starts whirring, but after a split second, it dies down.
My cursor has a small disc appear next to it, then it dissapears, then it repeats that about 3 times.

Thats about all really, ill keep looking for weird symptoms...

If those copied games arent working, then THEY NEVER WILL! sorry but if everything else works, and the burned ones dont, then you'l never get them to work

They arent copied, i buy all my games from stores. Established ones, not backwater shops with dodgy lighting and the manager wears fishnet vests and has man breasts.

My games dont work, but bought DVD's and bought CD's will work.

So i just want to know why it reads everything but my games.

Now it wont read Audio CD's. Like my albums. Hmm 0_o

If that's the case, you probably have a dying CD drive on your hands. If it won't read games, if it won't read audio CDs, then it'll probably give in completely in a few days.

Oh, and have you considered buying a CD Drive cleaning kit? Depending on how much you use your CD drive and how old it is, cleaning your drive lens through the kit may help some.

One edit: If you really wanna get geeky, go into the Command Prompt (Start, All Programs, Accessories) and type in [ d: ] and hit enter. That should bring you into the CD drive. Then type [ dir ] and hit enter, it should bring up a long list of programs. If not, that means the computer isn't reading the D drive, also known as the CD drive.

Tried your Edit idea. It says "The device is not ready.".

I smell a problem?

Edit: Also, its only a year old, my Drive.

Edit Edit: I hardly use my Drive. Only since about a month ago, ive used it twice to play Halo. Coz i gave my PS2 to my girlfriend, long story.

Ah! Excellent!

Do your homework.

The general consensus from what I've gathered is this: replace your CD drive. It's shot.

Dunno if this help's, but heres my Drive's specifications and all that.

http://www.liteon.com/prod/getProduct.do?xml_id=4_2&menu_ id=4 _2_7&cid=1_7_5&pid=19

And it has a life of 70,000 hours, right?

Ive had mine for a year and a half.

Half a year, 182 days. 365 days plus 182, equals 547, times that by 24 (number of hours in the day) and you get 13128. So my Drive's life expectancy is nowhere near death.

Edit - Done my homework, and it figures that most owners of my Drive have had my problem, that DVD's work, and CD's and Games wont. So should i re-download my firmware and drivers?

Try that and see what happens. I would likewise try everything before calling it quits, but do consider that new CD drives are pretty cheap nowadays.

Happened on my Gateway, with the Lite-On DVD/CD drive. First it started messing up when I was trying to burn mix CD's, then it started making a horrible buzz noise when I had CD-Roms in. The DVD's played just fine though. I've since replaced it with a Pioneer unit and it's working fine.

Bleh, i dont even have the money to replace it >.<

My RAM upgrade may have to wait now 0_o

Oh well.

Edit:

Any specific things i should be matching with my current disc drive? I know size is an obvious one, but is there anything else i should be checking?

If slimtype means it's a half height drive, then you may have to look around a while, unless you shop online.

But if all you need is DVD playback and CD Burning, then you can replace it in the $35 - $70 range.

How about this one?

Don't ask us. It's your decision. Remember, though, that depending on what you want your CD drive to do, you might want to pick carefully. That model above, for instance, doesn't support CD Burning or even DVD playback, things that are considered commonplace nowadays. You might want to consider a model that supports CD writing and even DVD burning.

Looks on the expensive side...

Of course, I don't really know how pricing goes across the pond.
