I just got a new PC (Store-bought, I don't have the energy or time or money to attempt building one) and I'm wondering about optimizing it for Halo. Now oddly - I run it on my old PC:

Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz
512 MB RAM
64 MB [shared] Video [Intel Extreme integrated]
2 GB allocated to Virtual Memory

And it doesn't show particle effects (So I'm an easy grenade kill) or detail textures (I.E. Master Chief is white with a black visor, and I can't see bushes)
Other than that, however, it runs fine. Good response and everything. Just looks like hell...

Now my new PC:

AMD Athlon 64 3400 (I think it's a 2.2GHz, but I'm unsure)
1 GB RAM
256 MB (shared) nVidia GeForce 6100 Integrated
4 GB allocated to Virtual Memory

Looks WAY better, I can see all the neat little graphic effects and all of that, but it runs really slow. I tried locking the framerate, and it doesn't make a lot of difference. I'm hoping the 400 MHz slower chip didn't eat it up that badly, but I'm really not sure.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Mine runs smoothly with the integrated graphics. Your card is better, so the framerate should be better. Check your driver options.

Whoa. A moderator. When'd you become one of them ninjas? Last time I checked, you had an Eagle/Clan avatar...

Anyways. Latency is due mostly (but not always) to two things: The processor or the RAM, and since both of them are pretty high-end, I'm guessing its other stuff clogging up your system. Check for other programs running at the same time. IM programs, extraneous stuff, just check your System Tray. You could also try command prompt: MSCONFIG to delete all the extra crap on startup. Seeing that you know how to build your own compy, that should be pretty old-hat to you. Oh, a virus scan, cause those take bites out of your RAM.

You could also try turning off all eyecandy, that slows your game down. However, seeing your specs, that shouldn't be a problem.

Oh, by the by, is your game lagging on the SP as well as MP, or on just the MP? Cause if its just the MP, could be just everyday lag.

I would HIGHLY suggest a new videocard. That will be the most help of all.

how much would you have to spend on a videocard? if you could spend about $150-200 you will be able to have the settings all the way up.

Well I was going to save until I could get a 7800 at least, so I won't have any problems with Oblivion.

But that really doesn't explain the odd lagging.

Try turning off Specular, CPU sounds to medium, resolution to 800x600 (or lower) also, try adding

-use11

to your Halo command line.

Also, what are your average FPS?

also take off the 4 gigs for virtual memory. That just slows it down. Set it to like 256mb

256 mb is a bit low... just put it on let windows manage it. thatll work fine especially with your gig of ram. it might be that youre trying to run at too high of a res?

also the thing that kills frames the most is speculars and shadows. i get kickass frames with those off. granted sometimes it looks like butt but i can aim better :)

I hate to brag (lie) but I get around 60-80 FPS at 1280x1024 with all those settings enabled.

As other people pointed out already, it´s your video card. Sure, it´s better than the Intel crap, but it´s still integrated.

There is nothing wrong with the processor, since that one is on the higher end of the mid-range CPU´s. Just pop in a decent graphics card and you´ll be fine. If you´re looking for a pretty decent card for little or no money, check out the 6800 GT or if you want to spend a little more, the 7800 GT.

Did you make it to VSYNC, i thought my graphic card sucks untill I realize theres a option for you to change framerate, also nice avater I wish I could get a custom avater...

And I get about 80-100 FPS

that post shows that you know nothing about computers

Really? Mind explaining, then, instead of simply flaming other members?

and his Nvidia 6100 is more then enough to handle Halo since Gearbox recommends a 6 series or up to play Halo on max.

It's integrated. They have issues.

Your graphics card sucks. Get a new one. Go for the 7900 GT - the new one. Its the best bang for buck card out there currently. Same, if not better performance as a 7800GTX, but only costs $300 (7800GTX costs around $350-400)

I turned off my AV and it did run much better. Still I think the video is the biggest culprit from what I gather here. It does yank it's memory from the RAM.

I'll try to get a 7800 sometime this summer, but for now I'll play without the eye candy on my older one.

Meh, edited for rudeness. I consider my point proven. Think before flaming.

As has been said before, yeah, I suggest a new Graphics Card.
