Hey, how's it going?

It was supposed to be the human equivalent to the energy sword, but was taken out.

Look what the energy sword did to H2 multiplayer.
My thought has always been that they ditched it in favor of the melee concept where any weapon in a spartans hand was better than one on his back.

Because a piece of metal wouldn't be able to cut through a Spartan's (or elite's) armor yet alone do significant damage. Burning hot plasma blade > stick of metal.

There's a funny comic explaining this online somewhere, but I have no idea where.

But then how do assassinations work in Reach?

This is what confuses me. Isn't a knife just a small stick of metal?

Emile killed that elite that killed him by sticking his knife in the elites throat which wasn't protected by armor or complete armor. And assassinations work the same way they stab the are in a spartan that is not as protected.

That kinda makes sense, but isn't the entire body covered in an energy shield?

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

Spartans are physically capable of ramming a solid object thru an Elites energy shield. I'm assuming the machete was dropped from the game because it didn't fit in with the over-all goal for the gameplay aesthetic.

Real Reason the Machete Was Taken Out of the Game:

Bungie was originally planning for all of the guns to be shooting only. This fits with all other FPS games at the time. While having them all shooting only, there would be one weapon for melee combat. This was also a standard of the time. (Ex. Crowbar from Half-Life, Gauntlet from Quake, etc.) Bungie later decided that instead of that, they would introduce a system where each gun would have a melee to it instead of having a weapon dedicated to it. In the end, this system worked much better than the previous dedicated melee weapon system. It was simply much quicker and easier for close quarters situations and would always be an option when having the 2 weapon system Halo also invented. Most FPS games now have adopted the concept.

But what about the assassination that goes through the top of the helmet? (The one that people take pics of because it looks like oral)

the energy shielding is probably not meant to protect from something piercing into the armor and probably only protects from lighter beatings

they must rely on there strength and weak points in the opponants armour to overcome the weakness of the steel

Armor is kinda funny in that is usually is developed to defeat certain threats. You can ram a combat knife or an ice pick through most ballistic nylon weaves(KEVLAR) on the market today. It's not too unbelieveable that low tech weapons might have more success against sophisticated armor than the higher tech stuff.

The knife is a VERY pointy TITANIUM stick of UNBREAKABLE metal THRUST INTO the body instead of CUTTING.

I just fiinished the flood novel this morming and, onn multiple occasions, the MC's shields were breeached by a single attack by the flood. ALSO in the final chapter, a floodling jumps on MC's face and sticks a needle into his neck. Now, of course, the only reason this worked is because a combat form popped the shield...

Meh

Then explain the head stabbing assassination spartan on spartan...

Oops. I think I just lost your mind.

Here's the difference between a machete and the head-stab assassination. A sharp point (knife) likely CAN go through Mjolnir armor when a Spartan has his strength behind it. A blade, however, has a lot more area to apply pressure over, thus far less pressure at any given point. Even a Spartan can't put enough force behind a blade to go through Mjolnir armor, but the point of a knife increases the pressure greatly.

And any blade swung at Mjolnir armor would likely just deflect off the energy shield, and if not that the metal plating, but if a blade is stabbing it will not deflect as long as their is a Spartan supplying the power behind the blow.

It's not camping, it's holding the designated location.

It might also ruin the effect of a futuristic fps, ie aliens are running at you with plasma guns and you have a sword, that would mess any game up.

  • 08.04.2011 9:09 AM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Because, logically, it would be just about useless.

  • 08.04.2011 1:18 PM PDT

Yes, I AM just that awesome.

My guess is that Bungie was originally going to have MC be able to pick up the Energy Sword, and when that idea was scrapped, there would be no need for a counterpart.

Major C.B.

Are we all partially retarded in trying to logically explain why a knife works in Reach?

Well no, because there's an assassination that goes through the top of the helmet. Not the body glove, the actual armor.
