Pathetically I have not even played the full version of Halo pc yet. I was one of the people on the forums whining every day about how I couldn't wait for it. Anyway, I'm ready to do something about it. I've got a sony vaio system (P4 2ghz, 256 DDR, 64 MB onboared intel video *yuck* etc.) I do NOT have an AGP slot. I was thinking of selling my GBA SP and some games to purchase a nice PCI card and hopefully Halo, do you think I can run Halo decently playable if I were to do that? If so, what PCI card do you recommend? Any help would be much appreciated.

Well, I have a system about as bad as you. I made my dad get me the game, and I still have fun playing it. He has however, baught a cheap little 128 meg nVidia chip for my computer, and it SHOULD work tremendously well. If I were you, I wouldn't waste money on a GOOD chip, just get a decent one.

Yea I would mainly just like to run the game smoothely at 800x600 or maybe 1024. But pretty much I just wanna run the game smoothely. Use of the nice shaders the game has would be nice too. But again as I said I mainly care about smoothe performance.

It will be hard to get all the graphics features to run smoothly without an AGP card. I have a high end machine I built myself, and Halo can still get a little bogged down while I'm slaughtering my enemies in mass quantities.

Not it's just barely over a year old. And what do you mean I solved my own problem. I just want to go from unplayable 10 fps (with everything lowest and 640x480) to at least playable.

What computers do not have at least 1 AGP slot...I live in such a tech fantasy land. What brand is it? Motherboard must be generic. Yeah I recommend getting a new comp too, you should be able to get a better one for $500 and up, if you build it yourself and get help selecting the components it can be very powerful. You save alot of money if you salvage your old monitor and drives.

EDIT: but for a comp that's only a year old....see if you can find a PCI version of at least the ATI Radeon 9600XT or nVidia GeForce 5600.

Here's your simplest solution.

1. Save money.

2. tigerdirect.com or newegg.com. Two of the easiest sites for people who have never built a machine before.

3. Buy a new motherboard that supports the processor you already have. Your P4 will be fine to make Halo playable, you just need a motherboard with an AGP slot. There's no need for a high end motherboard, just get one with an AGP slot and enough PCI slots for your sound card, modem, network card, etc.

4. Buy a video card with atleast 128MB of memory.

5. Buy more RAM. I would have a total of about 512MB in your system.

6. Buy a computer case with atleast a 400W power supply. The extra power will let you expand later if you want to.

7. Gut the computer you have. Get everything except for the motherboard. Throw all the components and the new parts into the new PC case and enjoy.

Might seem like overkill to get one game to work, but this will make your machine much faster and capable of running games for a while to come.

If you shop smart, you can probably do this for between $150 to $250. It just all depends on how much speed you want.

My computer is a Athlon XP 2200+ 512 mb ram 256 Geforce Asylum 256 pci mb video card. And it's almost four years old, and it runs Halo like a dream (on 640x480, too afraid to switch any higher, might damage my ego lol) I get nearly movie looking framerates sometimes, but sometimes I get a pretty slow rating (mostly at times like when you're running to the longsword at the end of The MAW. ) Have you turned off vsync? That helps alot. Sadly, most of the pre-assembled computers you'll get are not really made for gaming. It really takes a personal touch to get them running good. Hope you get to play Halo in its glory someday though.
