I don't think that Reach's ranking system particularly too well. In future halo games, it could be used as a reference, but thats about it. Honestly I enjoy 1-50 rankings way better. It gives you something to work for. I was always encouraged to play Halo 2 or 3 to work on getting that next rank. It was great to rank up with friends as well.
Halo 3s ranking system was good, but flawed. Rank was a poor determination of real skill. There were way too many people to reach the rank of 50, whether they were legit or boosters. Problem was, there were different breeds of 50's. For example, MLG players were the best of the best, but boosters were not even in the same league. Giving them both the rank of 50 is unfair to both types of players, since they are in completely different leagues. Therefore, I think, it needs to be more difficult to reach each rank.
Halo 2 had it best. It was very hard to rank up. 30's in Halo 2 translated to 50's in Halo 3. 40's were insanely good, and I never once saw a legit 50. MLG pros were only in the upper 40's. Every type of player had their own rank. There was always room for improvement, which was the best way to play.
TL;DR Halo 2 ranking was the best. 343 needs to go back to 1-50 to have a successful multiplayer. Reach's system just doesn't work.
