Mentioned a number of times in the "O Brave New World" Vidoc, Bungie had a project called "Phoenix" at the same time as Halo CE and ONI.
Is this a dropped project? What do we know about it?

Oh hey there

It's a metaphor for the 07s' lack of identity. too old to be newfag, yet too new to be oldfag, we wander b.net in search of a home, forever trying to be something we are not.

They also mentioned "tiger". So I am going to assume their next games main character is a tiger in space with a jetpack.

it was a project that got cancelled early in development. I'm guessing it had some medieval or fantasy elements in it.

I think it was a codename, like "Blam!". It may have been the Halo MMO that was dropped...

Nobody cares about anyone else's opinion - be it mine, yours, or a cult of angry star wars nerds - when they are enjoying what they enjoy.

It was an original project that got cancelled around the time Halo 2 came out. Basically, in order to meet their deadlines for the Halo games, Bungie had to cut every other project they were working on. This is part of what motivated their split from Microsoft.

Nobody knows for sure what Phoenix would have become, but it was thought to be a medieval action game of some type. Another codename for the project was Breach.

Warning: You may find that my, or someone else's opinion does not comply with yours. Side effects of disagreement may include (but are not limited to): flaming, irrational behavior, broken keyboards, and/or nervous sweats. If you experience any of these symptoms refrain from communicating with others until the symptoms have subsided.

It's on the Bungie wiki.

Looks like it would have been pretty badass, right? Oh well. Hopefully they'll revive it someday.

OR MAYBE THEY ALREADY HAVE.

Well other than a DS game and a supposed Gameboy game I don't have any other guesses.

Realy? Then it might be the project, or it could be the base idea but with many changes. I'd bet it isn't what it started out ot be anymore by a long shot considering how long it's been left alone.

Maybe, or it could simply be a dead project that Bungie likes to reference from time to time. My theory is that it's a secret second game Bungie is developing alongside their new IP. We'll just have to wait and see.

Not everything Bungie was working on at the time was for Halo. And they've made games beside Halo.

Or it's actually dead and they aren't reviving it. If Bungie revived every dead game they made then where's the speculation about Mosaic, which is just as dead as this Phoenix thing?

Yeah, if I had one complaint about the ViDoc, it's that they didn't spend enough time talking about Marathon and Myth and that stuff.

Hey, one can dream, right?

The only reason I think Phoenix might come back from the dead is because so much work went into it. They spent quite a large chunk of time on that project, and although it never got off the ground, it would be sad to see that much work go to waste.

But that's the point: It never got off the ground, and little of the original Phoenix group remains. Also, there's little evidence as to what stage the game was in.

You have a point. However, the way Bungie talks about Phoenix, it sounds less like they didn't know where to go with it and more like Microsoft made them cancel the project so that they could focus on Halo games.

But yeah, most of the original team is no longer with Bungie.

Hmm? They never said Microsoft forced them to cancel Phoenix. And Bungie has said very little about Phoenix. We don't know the whole story about what happened to it.

  • 08.04.2011 2:17 PM PDT

I grew up playing your games Bungie, and I sure as hell am looking forward to whatever you decide to do next.

Well the Phoenix symbol has popped up in Halo believe it or not. Check out the Vanguard achievement in Halo 3.

They never said it, but they've talked about merging the Phoenix team into the Halo team (and, later on, the Halo 2 team) so that they could meet the deadline imposed upon them by Microsoft. That's not exactly a forced cancellation, but it's just as good as one.

I know it's wishful thinking to some degree, but I really think Phoenix could be back. We'll just have to wait and see. I'm obviously just speculating.

Doesn't matter if it's "just as good as one". Microsoft forced them to do nothing, they killed the project of their own accord, therefore making it less likely they would revive it.

I disagree. It seems to me that they had no alternative.
