"Go and tell the world my story..."~ The Count of Tuscany
Just like many of us here, I just finished watching the ViDoc from bungie. I learned some pretty nice facts about the company's history, how development went at the start, and also this new beginning they had. At the end of the video, I took a bit of notice to how they were pretty much emphasizing the idea of starting new, with a whole new world and universe and how it was going to be different from Halo. To me, that meant this new game is something I haven't seen on the market today, in any shape or form.
So, I decided to hypothesize on what this new game would be like, seeing the images that I saw in the ViDoc.
-Open world/sandbox
-Colonization-ish/RTS gameplay...
-...done in First person
Let me break it down...
Open World/Sandbox
To me, when they kept saying "new world", I think they may be creating something that is supposed to be open ended. They may be creating a game where it isn't really linear in its gameplay, but where you can go absolutely anywhere on this new world and find something cool or new to do.
Of course, we have already seen video games with open worlds such as Elder Scrolls series; Fallout series, Spore, and many other games that I can't think of at the top of my head.
How could this game be different (with an open world) unlike the games I mentioned above?
Well, like most open worlds, there is usually a border to the game that you cannot pass. Its called the edge of the map. In this new game, what if the ends of the map met at the other side, like it was a whole planet or a world? Do you understand the italicized question?
Plus it can be different by...
A game based on colonizing.
No, not like Civilization, or Age of Empires, or any other RTS game out there. What if colonizing was an aspect of the game from a different viewpoint other than 3rd person?
Bungie mentions "Brave New World" in this ViDoc, possibly as a hint to what the game could be about. Let me put it into simpler terms, in the form of a made up story:
You are a captain of a spaceship, making way for a new undiscovered planet. It is rich in its rumored resources and its beauty. You land here to establish a settlement, and tasked to make a living on this planet and survive from its hostile dangers.
The one of the purposes to the new game could be the idea of establishing this new world. I mean, in some games such as the Elder Scrolls Series, Fallout, and even the Halo series (see "Open World" above), towns and settlements (and past settlements, what you call Ruins) were already established in their game worlds.
So in this new game, what if it was made that you were part of the discover of this new world.
In Bungie's Halo 3 and Halo Reach, we were able to almost do that in the form of Forge, where we could build maps (or anything) within the games boundaries. In this new game, we could do that, but have it be an essential part of the game and its story.
But how would this game be played?
My last idea...
Hybrid-First Person
To play as some who is part of the discovery of a new world, should it be best to view it in first person?
I think so :P
As far as I'm clear, I have no clue if it is going to be a shooter, RPG, or even an RTS. Whichever the case, I think this new game may be performed from a First Person standpoint, with some RTS elements to constructing settlements and managing those settlements.
Heck, like I said above in my last example, maybe it would be something similar based off Forge.
However, I believe the gameplay should go beyond from constructing settlements. If this new world has many dangers, wouldn't it a good idea to carry around some sort of a gun? Or perhaps even a sword?
What if there were tribals, or a different alien race that settled on this new world before you? Perhaps we could travel to and negotiate with these people to form an alliance or to trade; or we could attack them and capture or raze their settlement. There could be a lot of possibilities with this kind of gameplay.
If you read through my three reasons based on my idea of what this new game would be like, what do you think of it? Feel free to ask me any questions.
=================================
For those who didn't want to read the wall of text, here is a one paragraph summary of my idea:
You are an explorer on a new world, with a task from the world you came from to colonize and make a living off the land. As you construct your settlement(s) on this world, you must also survive against the possible dangers on this new world, as well as possibly others who have lived on this planet before you. As you establish your home base or settlement, you are able to discover the world around you, and find treasures or artifacts of this world to learn its history (and possibly something that could be very important or vital to the story). It could be played from a First person view, with combined elements from RTS games and Halo's Forge mode to construct settlements.
As I stated at the beginning of my post, this is just my hypothesis/idea on what the game could be like!!! I know NOTHING of what the actual game is and will be. I typed my hypothesis so I can for the purpose of a discussion.
And if I'm wrong or right, I will still be very excited to see the new game that Bungie is making. I can't wait to see what the actual game will be like.
