Subject: Which graphics card do i need to get to play halo online smoothly?

So NOW what?
What would happen if a BR and an SMG had kids? Halo Reach Spawn Weapon of choice, of course!

Hello everyone,

I've been trying to play halo on mac for over 2 months now and i cannot get a fully smooth performance based gaming experience.

1) Is there any way for the Mac version of Halo to run smooth? I am currently playing on a 60gb ibook with 10.4 tiger.
2) I will purchase a new graphics system and Halo for PC if i can get some hard core info on what will make Halo PC smooth with little glitches, i currently run Win 2000 on my pc. I really need to find an answer for the annoying glitchy Mac OS Halo games.

Either Mac or PC, it doesnt matter to me as long as its near the top in performance.
$$$ is no option if it is the right situation that will work well.

to play on 1280X1024 with everything on the highest setting I'd recommend the 6600GT at least. Anything lower will be appear to be "shakey".

what interface are you using btw. APG, or PCI-E (or if your on the stone age, pci).

As of top of top performance for PCI-E : Nvidia 7900GTX, 7900GT, 7800GTX, 7800GT, ATI x1900XL.

APG : Nvidia 7800GS, ATI x850 Pro

thats really old technology with everything turned off. Theres no reason to go back to pci. If you have an AGP slot i would highly suggest a 6600GT which you can get for about $150 now.

Okay first off, what kind of iBook G4 do you have? Post your system specs! I'm assuming it's a 14" with everything stock on it. To speed things up, go to your nearest apple store and ask them to install RAM on it. Halo should run fine at 800x600 with most of the settings off or at low on the iBook's Radeon 9550 with 32MB of dedicated video RAM.

Mr. Fatal05, there are some discrepencies with your specs, first, you say your Athlon 64 3500+ is overclocked to FX55 'speeds'?

Well, if memory serves, the 3500 uses a Clawhammer core, the FX55 uses a San Diego. Thus, you would never get close to the FX series power.

My Athlon 64 3700+ however does have the San Diego core, plus 1mb of L2 Cache, thus making it an underclocked FX model CPU.

Well, ATI pretty much wipes out the competion, im running on an Nvidia GeForce 440 go (a laptop variant of the geforce 4 mx). I have no luster or reflections or anything like that, but i'm running an average 80 fps. framerate is never a problem for me, but all the Geforce 4 family is @%#$ed up. dont expect to play ANY high-end game with it. Im really worried that I will be able to play Halo 2 PC with it. if not, im just buying a used Xbox.

That's not true. The current high-end laptops have up to 2.16 Ghz intel core duo processors with ATi Mobility X1600 (I think it's an XT) with 256 MB of dedicted video RAM. The iBook G4 isn't designed for games, or crazy performance, but it can play Halo at modest settings. And why do you suppose a mac would have worse performance than a PC? Do you realize there are PowerMacintosh G5's with 2 dual core processors clocked at 2.5 GHz with 1.25 GHz FSB and three different GPU options: 6600 GT, 7800 GT, and FX4500 (512 MB). The Powermacs are also expandable to up to 16GB of RAM and are the most upgradable macintosh computers available. I have a friend who had a 400 MHz G4 powermac and he upgraded it to a 1.3 GHz G4 CPU.

Moral of the story: do some research before bashing an entire line of excellent computers.

I doubt you'll be able to play H2PC, especially if Bungie is using DirectX 10 for it.

Yeah, what GreenXPanda said!

There is some awesome gaming you can do on a laptop. Especially on a mac!

My computer makes me happy, though it is a far, far cry from what you guys. Far.

Nvidia 5500. I'll just leave it at that.

........you don't need this..........this is what I just built :D :D :D:D:D:D:D

so you overclocked your cpu 400mhz? what heatsink do you have?

For one, most laptops arent meant for gaming. Even the gaming ones (xps, voodoo's, falcons ect...) score lower than their desktop counterparts. Theyre still insanely fast and could destroy most desktops, but theyre not quite as fast as the desktop versions.

And no mac's are not amazing for gaming. My unlcles graphics design company has 5 powermac G5's and I use them occasionally(with the 23" displays, 2 dual core cpu's, and 5 gigs of ram). Theyre incredible for 3d design, rendering, drafting, video/music production, but not too impressive for gaming. If I were paying $2500 for a gaming computer, I would expect much more than 70 fps on all games. I'm not saying they suck, theyre extremely powerful machines, gaming is just not their strong point.

It also depends on when they bought them and what graphics card options they added. As stated earlier, it comes stock with a 6600 GT, but can be custom ordered to a 7800 GT or an FX4500.

2 have the 7800's, and the other 3 have 6600's.

Back to the original question.....

I would highly highly highly suggest an nvidia 6800GT. They are really nice cards for the price, and you will be able to play halo with the highest settings.

but first, what interface are you using? agp, pci-e, pci

if you have agp, I'd recommend this 6800GT: its cheap, and a decent card.

yeah if you're using PCI, you will probably be disappointed. I don't even think they make computers without AGP/PCI-E slots anymore anyway.

Sorry, Green. While I do agree that Macs are an excellent line of computers (I would buy one if I had the assets), they're not really meant for gaming.

From my own experience, notebooks to begin with aren't designed for gaming. I've used two (microsoft) laptops over the course of 4 years, trust me, I know. They're nonupgradeable for starters, meaning what you buy is what you'll have to stick with for the next few years. There's no way you can upgrade into that fancy new Dual Core or anything of the sort. As for Macs, they're a really good system and schtuff (and the gold standard for multimedia editing), but the problem lies not in the machine, but in the fact that very few game makers out there make games for Macintosh.

I use a laptop mainly because I'm in college and I prefer to take my stuff with me and use it on the fly, but if I weren't rushing all over the place all the time, I'd definitely get...no, I'd build my own desktop.

Im going to college this fall and I plan on getting an xps with the 78000GTX so i can do some gaming. I'll just buy a mouse and keyboard to hook up to it so i dont have to use the crappy laptop keyboard and mousepad thingy.

Hm. Make sure that Dell's got Wifi...even if your college doesn't support wifi, it's a good thing to have around in your computer. And make sure its portable. The best laptop is a laptop that's got a good balance between power and portability. You don't want a 5 pounder that's impossible to bring with you to class, that defeats the purpose of the laptop, but you don't want some uber-expensive laptop that runs on a measly Celeron. Oh, and if you've already built your own computer, might want to keep that too, and use both your laptop and your desktop.

But that's just me. Good luck in college.

yep it has wifi, and my college does support it. Im deciding between the xps which is a gaming powerhouse, or a sony vaio xs i think it is which is very very small and light. Both are very fast, but also very expensive too.

Im just gonna keep my computer that i built at home, i dont feel like lugging it to college.
