Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

World of Warcraft also has decades of development and polish, and isn't exactly server-intensive. An FPSMMO would absolutely have heavier network requirements.
I wouldn't say "decades" but you are right. But I believe if anybody could make it work, bungie could. MMO or not, I will be buying it :P. Bungie has shown me for years that I am not going to be in for disappointment.
I will agree with you there.
I remember an old quote from Bungie Studios. "Our goal is to revolutionize the gaming industry and gaming genres." Well, that wasn't the exact quote, but it captures the meaning.
I thought of that when I saw the most recent ViDoc. They were talking about how they never would have imagined Halo becoming so popular, and sticking with the genre for ten years. In a way, I believed they felt trapped by the success of Halo. They couldn't just abandon such a hugely popular franchise. There was a lot they could do with it. But once it got to the point where people were expecting a Halo game after each one, I wouldn't be surprised if they panicked a bit.
Bungie wants to be known for breaking the mold, and you absolutely cannot do that if every game you make is made from a mold taken off your own shelf. If you want to revolutionize the industry, you've got to take a risk. You've got to start from scratch. You've got to, as they put it so well, "go boldly to the stars. Per Audacia ad Astra.
If I were a game developing studio, which I am not (People can't be buildings and companies), and I felt I was far away from my goal of revolutionizing industries, I would take one of the biggest genres and turn it upside down.
Let's think of the genres today:
FPS
MMO
RTS
RPG
Sim
Action-adventure
Bungie did their thing with Myth in the RTS genre, and again with FPS with Halo. I wouldn't exactly consider RPG stagnant, with Fallout and Final Fantasy and Fable and many others.
Simulation games aren't exactly hugely popular. You've got a solid fan base, but the definition of simulation is so broad and undefined that it would be hard to revolutionize.
Action adventure games are kind of a loose genre, sometimes being used with terms like "shooter" or the such. There's a bit of room in this genre for work, but not as much as...
MMO. Let's face it. You hear MMO and you think WoW, or maybe LoL. You may think I'm just scapegoating here, but it's just like FPS. FPS = Halo for many people. The MMO genre would be a great environment for Bungie to work in.
