I like classic rock.

So near the end of the ViDoc where they show that cool program with the mountains being placed, does anybody know what that program is? Cause it looks like it would be fun to screw around in even though it probably costs thousands of dollars.

I hope that it's an actual program and not their own because it looked so cool to use.

Great DAY

That's the same thing I was wondering, it looked pretty cool and entertaining, but you're probably right about the cost of it. That's most likely a thing that a game studio has and not obtained by a normal person.

This thread would have appealed to me more if it was written with crayons.

I broke one of the cords for my X11s because I couldn't get past the final American course in Doritos Crash Course.

I think its called Grognok, but alot of that is based on speculation.

In another thread somebody said that it is their map editing tool that is trademarked by Bungie called Grognok.

I just Googled it and all I could find is that Bungie does own Grognok but nowhere does it say anything about a terrain editor.

I guess i'll just have to stick with From Dust.

Yeah, I recall hearing somewhere that they made a lot of their own tools.

EDIT: Or I'm completely insane.

Seems to be just their in house terrain sculpting program using height map brushes, kind of like what you can do in ZBrush or this or this or this.

Obviously it has more features, like roads and stuff. We made something similar for my uni project.

This is odd. I have a feeling that Grognok is software for the PC that you can download. Once downloaded, you can create extremely detailed maps and port them to the consoles (PS3 and Xbox).

Look at it. It looks extremely simplistic. This is similar to the GECK that Bethesda lets us use.

I wouldn't call that extremely simplistic, I'd call Notepad extremely simplistic. I think we've already come to the assumption that Grognok is their in-house tool for map creation/editing.

With that tool it seems as if you can build much larger maps/worlds in a very short amount of time if you have the experience. Looking forward to seeing this tool at work.

I'm guessing that the program is for making (obviosly) video games, but no one here would probably know what it was just from looking at someone making mountains on a screen.

Just by a quick shakeycam screen? We haven't even seen what could be in the drop down menus and all that. We don't know if there are hotkey commands or what they are. Plus if it's in-house, it means it's constantly evolving. An artist needs a cave, cave carving features will be added. Alladat.

Do they NEED more though? I mean judging by their (or at least that one guy's) workflow it looks like they use heightmap stamps a lot, meaning 100% control. Need a mountain? Paint a B&W heightmap in photoshop real quick and import it.

edit: road brush eh? Well I guess it ain't ALL gonna be untamed terrain.

There's a lot of significant information to be gleaned from that screen.

I'd also like to support my "Grognok for the Players" theory.

Bungie was astounded by our creations with Forge and Theater. They've said they could never had imagined what we did, from great maps to brilliant art. Now what if Bungie feels that its players have more potential? More potential to build actual maps.
