This is the story of what halo has meant to me throughout my life. It's long and not worth reading, but I felt that after so many years I deserved to say goodbye.

Halo was the very first video game I ever played. I got an xbox for Christmas in 2001 and Halo with it, I was 12. I quickly fell in love with it, but it was a love/hate relationship even then. I had trouble with the mechanics, aiming was hard, not getting shot was harder. Countless hours saw me slowly master the game, every day after school I would beat my favorite levels of the campaign on legendary and just explore the multiplayer maps by myself. Sometimes I would give myself cute little restrictions to make the game more interesting (that's right, I played with skulls before there were any!)It took up most of my free time, whenever I wasn't at school or sleeping, you can bet that I was playing the game. This was only the beginning of my journey with Halo...

It wasn't until 2003 that I discovered XBconnect and I took my first real steps into multiplayer gaming. Needless to say, those steps were usually very brief, with a quick three rounds through my head on almost every map and spawn. I persevered and slowly, but surely, became a competent player. It was one of the most rewarding things that I've ever done. Learning strategies, mastering the game's mechanics, and overcoming other people who loved the game as much as I did. A lot of new players don't understand when people talk about the greatness of halo CE, but it was truly special. People loved the game and cared about it, not just medals and their K/D. This was before Activision ruined the FPS world with levels, ranks, and unlocks. In Halo CE players only cared about the winning, being skilled, and the game itself.

When Halo 2 was released in 2004, I was there on launch night, so eager to play Bungie's next masterpiece. After an entire summer of reading every single Bungie update, I was very excited. I tore my way through the campaign that night, it was awful, I didn't care. I'd moved on from single player gaming a long time ago and was ready to take on multiplayer. I found many of my skills transferred, but I also found some things I didn't like. The BR and Sniper were ridiculously easy to use and the Sword was a bad joke. See also: dual wielding. See also: vehicle combat. There were a few phases of the game that I can remember clearly; the first month where nobody knew what they were doing; the time of the plasma pistol that followed; and the littany of modders lining up to ruin a quarter of my games. In an effort to escape from the matchmaking system I discovered MLG and a group of players who were still enthusiastic about the game. I quickly started playing MLG customs, where I found a completely different level of skill and teamwork and a new challenge.

MLG inspired me to become a Pro gamer. I failed, but not for lack of skill. I was on the reserve roster for a semi professional team and my future prospects were looking very good, when my family decided to move back to the country. Sadly, the internet did not know this place and I didn't have a driver's license. Halo would sit and gather dust until late 2006. I got my license and went back to playing, but with friends now, once a month, in a basement. I realize now, looking back, that my best days of halo were gone, but I didn't then. Not knowing what Halo 3 would bring, I got excited and started following the Pro circuit again.

Halo 3 released in 2007, with much improved campaign, and a sad excuse for multiplayer; or so I thought. It took me a year to realize that individual skill was done, bungie had selectively killed it to make way for new players. I was no longer the target audience and this betrayal hurt, but I dealt with it by practicing the best teamwork possible with my friends. We went hundreds of games in a row without losses and dominated some nights so thoroughly that we forgot about sleeping and eating all together. Still, real bullets didn't work over live and the DMR spread was so inconsistent that we only played together sporadically and I never again approached MLG beyond the playlist in matchmaking.

Halo Reach was the end of something special for me. Halo has been with me almost longer than I've lived without it at this point and it's been the one thing I could rely on throughout some of the hardest times in my life. I loved halo. Reach is not halo, yesterday I accepted that. After countless frustrating wins and losses, I let it go. I won't complain about the mechanics here, that's been done enough. I just want to say that I'm terribly sad and at the same time, I've never felt so free.

Goodbye Halo...

I'll try to remember you as you were, not as you've become.

Its really good that people actually have passion for these games, leaves hope for gamers. I know this is a tad off-topic and all but chin up man. I thought Halo: Reach was good, i mean it wasn't Halo as we all knew it, but as a separate game It was pretty kick ass I thought. So no Halo: Reach may not have been the Halo we all knew and loved, it was still an entertaining game. i thought at least.

I really don't know. I'm watching BFBC3 closely, but nothing beyond that. CoD never really worked for me and while I tried a few PC shooters, I don't really think there's anything out there that's quite up to par.

I may start playing SC2, it's pretty big right now and the community is fantastic.

Halo is one of, if not THE, greatest, most entertaining and story-detailed shooter series. It just brings such a fantastic feeling to us loyal fans. I will miss it dearly from the bottom of my heart. I pray that 343i continues the Halo series the way it should be... the way it used to be.

It was something new to me. To play with Spartans, and fight for something, but lose.

That's how I felt my very first time over XBconnect. It's a different experience for sure.
