Subject: So in the vidoc...

...I thought Bungie did a good job at explaining their reasons for leaving Halo behind.

If I had to deal with the same ball and chain of Microsoft that Bungie did, I'd probably do the same. It's sad that they had to sell their prized possession for freedom, but I feel it was worth it. After I saw that one guy's face (the Microsoft creative director or something) when he was tallking about buying Bungie, I felt like Microsoft was being pretty dang selfish. His smile and speech gave me a bad vibe.

But meh, I don't know Microsoft that well.

Now that I think about it, you guys are right. Microsoft was probably more of a helpful giant that put Bungie on the map...well Bungie did that...but Microsoft helped it anyways.

I'm honestly glad Bungie is finished with Halo. They finished it off well. I would like to see Halo games eventually come to a close (I don't want the series to be milked).

I'm excited to see what Bungie comes up with next. They are free to do what they wish now. I hope I get to see them "stick it to the man."

Any thoughts?

BTW: Thank you all for your opinions and perspectives.

My original Op was a little harsh, and for that, sorry Urk. :p

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Yeah, Bungie can do whatever they want now.

If Micro$oft does milk Halo harder than a dairy cow, then I will be happy with Reach and Halo: CEA being my last Halo purchases.

In this scenario, I will play Reach so hardcore until they shut it off like what happened with Halo 2.

If Micro$soft ruins the franchise by over saturating the market, then I will just be happy with Reach being the finale/prequel and all of the ones Bungie made (Halo 1,2,3, & ODST). Other Halo games simply won't exist to me if M$ does this.

If they treat the Halo universe with the respect it has earned, then I will be a fan for many, many years to come.

But always my loyalty will be with Bungie, and my place as a loyal Spartan in the 7th Column.

There will never be a Halo game out every Year guys...NEVER.

And if it wasnt For Microsoft, Bungie might have gone Bankrupt back in the 90's.

...I saw how much of an overlord Microsoft really was to Bungie. You hear Bungie talking about their "pursuit of freedom" and "sticking It to the man," and they do a great job of explaining why they left Halo behind.

If I had to deal with the same ball and chain of Microsoft that Bungie did, I'd probably do what they did. It's sad that they had to sell their prized possession for freedom, but I feel it was worth it. After I saw that one guy's face (the Microsoft creative director or something) when he was tallking about buying Bungie, I felt like throwing every Microsoft product in the garbage and giving him a firm slap to the face. His stupid little greedy smile just pissed me off. You could tell he didn't give a crap about bungie's success. He looked ready to take Bungie for all it's worth and toss it away.

I'm honestly glad Bungie is finished with Halo. They finished it off well. Now micro$oft can milk it to failure all they want. We still know what company made the better games.

I'm excited to see what Bungie comes up with next. They are free to do what they wish now. I hope I get to see them "stick it to the man."

I got a completely different impression about the Microsoft guy: he actually seemed to genuinely admire Bungie. I also find the antipathy shown towards Microsoft amusing-without the company's considerable investment, there wouldn't be a "Halo" series in any form which you would recognise, and certainly not one on console-and I doubt you would ever have heard of Bungie.

In all honesty, it kinda seemed like they had no choice but to go with Microsoft. I'm sure, however, that they look back on it now thinking that 10 years of Halo has set them up to do whatever they want; they've now got the reputation, the money, the team and a license to make what ever game they want with the potential to achieve more than they ever have (hence their new IP being multiplatform).

  • 08.06.2011 8:45 AM PDT

"The Septagon symbolizes all that is right in the multiplayer world. A few million men and women, bound by honor, Bungie, and celebratory crouching."

Bit ironic that they left the ball and chain enviroment of microsoft and then promptly sign up with activision.

Microsoft wasnt bad to them. Microsoft gave them the opertunity to pursue their first goal of making Halo. It just exploded into somthing aamzing after that. Microsoft was never a tyrent to Bungie so im not sure whats so bad about it all.

He did seem really nice, and genuinely into Bungie, i think MS gets painted in a bad late, and sometimes it is true, but like any thing there are clearly some good people in there.

  • 08.06.2011 9:13 AM PDT

We were somewhere around Barstow...

Am I the only optimist here? I think that the franchise is in good hands, damn better hands than Activision anyway, but that wouldn't be hard.

  • 08.06.2011 9:13 AM PDT

Why is Microsoft the bad guy? Acquiring Halo was a legitimate business deal and Bungie knew they were going to have to give it up sooner or later, as they said in the Vidoc.

Either way Reach would've more than likely been Bungie's last Halo game anyways... no one with talent wants to stick to the same thing forever. What would be the point of the talent?

If Micro$soft ruins the franchise by over saturating the market,

I'm not disagreeing here. My post was meant as from now, into the future.

I won't deny the reasons for Bungie to go with Microsoft, nor will I deny that it was necessary at the time, nor will I deny how it helped Bungie and set them up to be where they are today.

I also believe that Bungie got here, with the assistance of Microsift, and a sh**load of hard work and very, very long hours on their part.

I think that the Microsoft guy in the video is genuine in his feelings towards Bungie as well as Halo.

I'm just saying that anything is possible, and one bad decision for the franchise can spell certain doom in this insanely competitive games market.

I have no fear that 343 and Microsoft will treat the franchise with the respect it has earned in the future years, I also have no doubt that Bungie split with Microsoft on amicable terms.

I wasn't trying to be a troll, so this is my reclarification. =)

I loveses me some Halo, and I loveses me some Microsoft (Xbox).

Halo will be perfectly fine in 343's hands, but I worry because Halo is easily my favorite game series. And you always worry about the things you love, because you care so much.

And Urk, when you can, please talk to us more. I understand that with the focus on the new IP, that everyone has to go much more silent, but I do loves your witty banter.

In closing, I'm not trolling. I worry for the Halo franchise simply because I care. But if it does fail, I will play Reach and all of the Halos until the 360 servers are shut off. Then I will play them offline. Not out of hatred, but because they are such great games.

That is a contingency plan, not a premonition

I am absolutely positive that this most beloved of franchises will be just fine for many years to come. =)

And when Bungie drops their new IP/game, I'll most likely play the sh** out of that too. lmao If it's anything resembling their most recent shooters, I have no doubt that I will be hopelessly addicted to it. ;-D

  • 08.06.2011 9:30 AM PDT

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

I think M$ needs to worry a little less about money and more about the consumer. They're supposed to be raising the XBL Monthly Fee...again. They should learn from Bungie. Despite my negative feelings toward Reach, I think Bungie does a good job with their community (consumers).

  • 08.06.2011 9:50 AM PDT

Don't forget though that it's also explained in the ViDoc that Bungie was having financial problems and that is one of the main reasons they wanted to talk to Microsoft.
It makes sense for Bungie to sell Halo as is also said in the ViDoc it would be stupid to assume Bungie was going to make Halo forever, so they could get rid of halo and have their freedom.
I'm not saying that Bungie doesn't like Halo they love it they just want to move on to different pursuits.

I'm happy we have been getting a Halo every year for the past couple of years, even if its a Campaign expansion then bring it on!

Microsoft isn't the bad guy, nobody is in this case. We may have only had Halo CE and it stop there if it wasn't for MS. I'm willing to bet most of us wouldn't have encountered Halo if it wasn't on the Xbox.

MS funded Halo's development all the way and will continue to do so. Halo is in excellent hands with 343i, they love Halo, they were dedicated Halo fans once upon a time. If they didn't love Halo, they wouldn't be working at 343i.

*cough*Infinity Ward*cough*

Infinity Ward = CoD IP & Studio Owned by Activision
Bungie = Owns their IP,Independent Studio and Activision just publishes it.

Totally different cases there and I'm sure with the bad press ACTV is getting, they wouldn't want to screw with a top, independent developer.

Bungie wins by being an independent company. The freedom they now have and the ability to own your creations is worth a steep price. However, I think it is short sighted to believe that the tenure under Microsoft was without merit. I'm sure there was a dark underbelly, but Halo would not be what it is today without them.
