"What are we holding on to, Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for."

Recently, I've noticed how often on Halo 3 I get out-BRed, or can't pull of that split-second headshot. I'm not bad at Halo or anything, I've reached a highest skill of 43 (feel free to browse my service record), I just seem to get destroyed by the top players. I play on a sensitivity of 2, and bought FPS Freeks, which undoubtedly help, but I'm still losing BR duels with astonishing regularity. I play the game more frequently than any others that I own, and recently played only MLG for roughly a week, which also helped, but didn't make me significantly better. I was wondering if any of you out there had some tips that will help me improve my BR. If any of you would like to help me out, just send me a FR. I've memorized every map perfectly, and taped respawn times for all weapons to my TV. Seriously, if I'm going to get that pathetic, I thought it might be time to ask for some help. Any ideas/forge maps/game modes/gameplays/seriously anything just please stop me?

I'm sorry America is busy helping others in the world and actually making a difference.

Something Canada will never do.

strafing is important

if you can't get the hang of it, just avoid putting yourself into situations where you might have to 1v1 BR battle someone. there's a lot more to this game than just having a good BR, despite what some people say.

Aim for the head, sensitivity is key. There is on Halo 3 a bleed through system on the BR. Which means that if you head shot them you can kill them even if they still have a bit of over shield left. As in Halo Reach I reliezed when it first came out it too had this system but later removed it. I discovered it by looking at in old game I played and a new one. Big difference. But that is off topic.

Just enjoy the damn game!
Who cares about BR vs AR

Look sensitivity 2? I'd change that to higher if I were you. Play on around 6 or 7 for a while, then switch to a lower speed. Its what I did and I found my aim improved a great deal.

Good idea....I tend to just attack people while screaming "Graaahgrh" so maybe just avoiding conflicts I can't win is good. And yes, there are plenty of other facets to the game besides BR, but it's the one in which I feel most lacking.

Yeah, lots of people say three to the body and one to the head, but I just aim for all headshots. I love the system where bullets pass through shields. It was an unpleasant surprise when Reach adopted a different system, and resulted in a lot of "what the heck?!!" moments when I attempted to AR beatdown.

Good idea. I play on 2 just because it used to be the only way I could hit stuff, but I was much more inexperienced then. Is the advantage of having a higher sensitivity simply faster turning, or is the idea just to get used to fast look speed, then have accuracy be a snap? How long do you think I should play on 6-7 sensitivity? A week is usually about how long it takes me to get used to something new, but I switched to bumper jumper a few days ago and I'm already fine with it. I assume I should just aim to play something like MLG or practice customs, where I can use my BR all the time.

I will not claim to be good at Halo. I am not the first and probably not the last.

The others have made some fine points. All of which you should pay attention to. This probably goes without saying but aim where your opponent is going to be not where he is currently. If they are strafing then position your shots so that they "run" into them. Slightly left or right. It will take some time to get used to. Biggest thing is keep moving and do not slow down. It can mean a lot. Hope this helps.

Thank you! I'll take all the advice I can get. I'll start using that tactic to shut down strafers.

I run Skirmish!!!

all the tips in here are good, another thing that helps is jumping.. Also, don't mess around with your sensitivity too much, focus on a range of two levels like i go between 4 and 5, any more and you will throw yourself off too much imo

This is what I did. I was playing on 6 for quite a while when I played Lone Wolves, then I switched down to 4 and my BR was much more consistent.

What should be my main sensitivity? Is 2 just too low, or should I come back to that once I get used to 6?

Thanks, playing baseball is definitely the way to improve my BR. It helped out my sniping too! Will basketball improve my rocket launcher?

Because you don't need good hand-eye coordination to play real sports.

  • 08.07.2011 1:52 PM PDT

Don't give anyone the opportunity to 'out-BR' you. Put as many shots in them as you can when you find yourself in a one on one and then strong-side around a corner. (Always have an exit strategy if you engage someone one on one.) Your teammates will clean him up and that will frustrate the hell out of him.

You'll find a lot of kids on XBL think Halo is all about 'out-BRing' ppl. It's only a small part of the game and you should only undertake the challenge when it's totally necessary. Idealy, only engage someone when you have the absolute advantage. When you go to out-BR someone, you don't have any more advantage than him, assuming he has a decent BR.

I play games for gameplay, not silly gimmicks

H3 MM warrior

Reach S7, 8 and 9 arena warrior.

H4 MM legend

Basically do what screamo told you to. People saying that you should switch ur sens have a point, but you should know that the feeling of consistency wont last forever, and may actually hurt you in the long run.

I have actually played on every sens I could for at least 2 weeks at a time, and I use 2. However 4 and 5 are also very nicely suited for MY style of play. What you really need to do is find a sens that you like and just keep practicing.

Which brings me to my next point, dont worry so much about those 1v1 situations. The best teams often rarely get into a situation where they have to 1v1 someone on the map. Use your team and position yourself to always be with one of them. As time goes on you will eventually get better, but trying to rush it will make you worse.

Should I stick with teammates as much as possible, then? That would probably be the best way to depend on an enemy getting cleaned up, right? Thanks for the tips, I'll definitely try these out today.

Yeah, well, I play chess, and that beats everything.

Ok, thanks! I think I'll play on 6 for a while, then drop down to 3 or 4. From the sound of it, I should just avoid 1v1 BR duels altogether, which is fine by me, seeing how often I just get cleaned up by that guy I don't see.

3 body shots 1 head shot.

I've heard lots of people say this, but wouldn't it just be better to aim all 4 pulses for the head? If their shields get worn down extra by a grenade, I'll get an immediate kill that I wouldn't if aiming for the body. Of course it's easier to aim for the body, but if I eventually get good enough to hit the head with unerring accuracy, won't I have to 'unlearn' this tactic?
