Ban them?...

This is hilariously awesome timing. I came in this thread to propose a second idea to accompany this, and the poster above me is exactly what I'm talking about! This timing is so weird.

I was just thinking. You guys know how people will, say, press enter a lot to make a really long post? Well why not... get rid of that? If you press the space bar more than once, it only counts the first space bar. So why not limit the amount of spaces the Enter Key will give you?

And limit repetitive statement or something, so if somebody puts some word (or a sentence) a thousands times, it won't let them post! The first one in particular seems pretty realistic to me though.
That could work, but what about discreet ones that look like they're OT but are link to other stuff?

Only after we ban Bricypoo.

Instead of them losing the ability to post for 24 hours it should make it a priority on the mods report list. That way The mods could give them long bans and such. It would also prevent innocents from being effected.

I want them to loose the ability to link, and make them high priority on the mods list. The no links is just to hold them off till mods arrive.

The ability to link should be granted as a privilege from an elected central governing body whose expressed purpose is to determine the vague "appropriateness" of a link. They would serve to review users and links, ensuring the successful and safe browsing of the forums.

It would be the job of the user to request permission from the committee to post a link. The committee would examine the users history in order to determine whether or not to issue the user a 'Linking Permit'. The permit will serve as a temporary privileged, ensuring the user the ability to post. The user will constantly have to be evaluated and reissued these licenses through monthly committee evaluations.

The permit would be a nonverbal agreement between the committee and the user. The user would agree to post appropriate content, and in return the committee would grant the user the aforementioned permit. If the user chooses to violate the agreement, the committee will be able to terminate said pact and withhold future permits for this expressed reason. Likewise, if a user feels that they themselves have been mistakenly issued the permit, and do not feel they can post appropriately, they may cancel the pact with a no-charge severance.

The committee would also serve to police users who post inappropriate links without the appropriate permits and/or papers. Since said governing body would be composed of elected users, the committee would not be connected with the functions of the forums or the moderation team. However, they still will be entrusted with identifying wrongful hyperlinks and responding appropriately. Appropriate responses, due to lack of connection with the web team or moderators, will be limited to private messages composed largely of unexplained insults, name-calling, and general harassment expected of users who actually care about the rules.

To guarantee a balanced system, this committee would be limited to their role in the enforcement and permitting of links. Under no circumstances would they involve themselves in other matters of rule violation. Such would be an overreaching (and thus misuse) of their authority and power.

As an afterthought, it may also be necessary to have a separate, non-elected and more permanent committee that oversees the elected committee. This new committee would ensure that the actual committee ensures that the users post links appropriately.

The way I deal with "bad link" spammers is to quote them.

In the quote area, it will show the link to the site and if I see anything unfamiliar, I won't click on it.

But I agree with your idea.

I suppose that could work, until the spammer got on another spammer alt, as they would eventually do anyway. The one thing that would really put the kibosh on trolls and spammers is a more effective ban system.

They should also make it so you can't use shortened links like tinypic or stuff like that. Even if you hover over it it won't show a direct link to the site.

My idea is not to stop trolls/spammers, but to minimize the number of people who hit the link and "neutralize" an account until a mod arrives.

I agree with this. Although they are helpful at times, the provide more harm then good. You could block 1000 sites, but if you leave the sites that shorten links open, whats the point?

It would work in theory, but would it be hard to put into practice?

Are you meaning technical wise? If so, I dont really know. Im guessing it would be somewhat of a hurdle, but it would work better than any other idea except maybe get more mods.
