*Shrug* The only, and strong only thing would be the pikes. However, those looked like a normal pike and not the honor guard one (would have to look it up).

Oh, definitely. If Ripa hadn't toyed with him, Forge would have died fighting alone. However, I've seen people go "Realistically, Ripa would kill Forge every time!" and I reply with "Um, not true, every time Forge would outsmart Ripa and play to his arrogance, which is why Forge won."
You are correct that Ripa's arrogrance was what got him killed. However, don't you think that it's a little farfetched that Forge would be able to tackle him like that, and then be able to keep fighting after that vicious punch to the stomach? I would think that a blow like that from an Arbiter would be like getting hit by a car.

I could be overestimating Ripa's strength though, and I'd just like your opinion on it.

you are right about the punch, that could have dented a car door.

The only ways he could have surived that punch were:

A: Rippa was toying with him, pulling his punches to prolong the fight and assert his dominace.

B: Perhaps Forge's chest piece was not just loose on the body like normal clothing, instead of being like a vest maybe it was more rigid, so it conducted the punch into the ground. Example

If any thing else had happened, Forge would have been coughing up his lungs while the Arbiter casually strolled off.

As for the tackling... I have no god damn idea how that was possible. I blame the Halo Wars team and their lack of cannonical knowledge.

We are all going to get banned aren't we?

regardless it should have taken longer to recover from that punch or atleast been showing he was hurt afterwards.

and bungie helped them with halowars, it was more of "it is a human character akin to johnson so has to be over badass".

Let's consider for a second the kind of strength that Ripa possesses. Before the end where Forge stabs him, Ripa grabs Forge by the head and holds him up near eye level. For the average human, it's difficult to hold a 30 lbs. child up like that. Go ahead go try to grab something that weighs between 20-30 lbs and hold it up like Ripa is holding Forge--you'll find that holding something like that is incredibly awkward and hard to do.

Halopedian says that Forge weighs 215 lbs (the accuracy of Halopedian or Halo wikia isn't relevant here because without that exact number we still know Forge is going to be pretty heavy). Ripa is not only holding him up in a position where the leverages are all wrong, he picks him up and holds him with ease. That is incredible strength.

I see no reason why Forge should have been able to tackle Ripa, then somehow hold his arm down so that he could shoot his hand until he let go of the sword. When it comes to the punch, it would be like stomach bumping a small car.

Agreed 100%

The only possible and still somewhat unlikely explanination is that Ripa is just messing around with Forge... It doesn't really seem like that to me, but if I had to guess bungies reasoning that would be it.

  • 08.08.2011 11:23 AM PDT

Not sure about the tackling, but as for the punch, to me Ripa's arrogance and ego was making him prolong the fight as much as possible.

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

Didn't Ripa also pushed/threw Forge with just one hand before he was stabbed in the neck?

Forge tackled, shot Ripa's hand till he let go. Then Ripa grabbed Forge, tossed him on his back, punched him in the gut and threw him against the slipspace carrier with one hand.

I think he did toss forge a distance after that though.

Then we have that Minor in the intro just hurling a dead Marine like 3-4 meters away with just one hand...

So last night I was laying in my bed, looking up at the stars, thinking "where the HELL is my roof."

I was looking at my career stats for campaign in reach. I have been killed by a spartan 23 times. How's that for having a -blam!- squad?

  • 08.08.2011 6:17 PM PDT

I believe that counts co-op, as I have never, as far as I can remember, been killed by Noble Team AIs.

Same here. Whatever issues someone has with Noble Team such as personality, dialogue, etc., they should leave their in-game AI out of it. Calling Emile an idiot because "he shotgun snipes" or Jun a terrible sniper because "he shoots me in the back all of the time" is off-base. AI has absolutely nothing to do with canon, and people need to understand that.

  • 08.08.2011 8:00 PM PDT

Noble Team did more for Reach than any other SPARTAN. You should be bowing your head in respect.

I'll remain a soldier until the war is won.

For Kats death it's been stated in supplemental materials that Kat sometimes left her shields turned off and often lacked awareness of the battlefield.

.....so in short she was a -blam!- spartan then.
Oh, let me just take my flak jacket off in the middle of a patrol through afganistan and not pay attention to the IED indecators blatently infront of me.
Why/how was she put on noble team then? Shldve fed her into the meat grinder with the rest of Beta company in that case

A: They were out of combat, so your example is false.
B: The glassing beam would have overloaded the shield systesm anyway.
C: Here's a good example of what it would be comparable to (since her helm was off).

You are out of combat and danger, you take off your vest so cool off some. Suddenly artillery strikes right near your location, so as you and your pals run you grab your vest and hastily put it on. Due to the fact you are -blam!- in a massive rush to escape the artillery, you don't fully get it on, and get hit by shrapnel and get wounded.

All of Noble Team had no shields when Kat got sniped.

  • 08.08.2011 8:50 PM PDT

If Noble team killed all the Zealots, what the crap is the player supposed to do? Game mechanics trump realism every time. If all the enemies are dead; that presents a game mechanics problem.

  • 08.08.2011 8:52 PM PDT

Who wants to beat if Noble Team had wtf curbstomped the zealots, people would -blam!- about how realistically it wouldn't have happened or some such nonsense?

I think there is a plausible alternative explaination:
There had just been a massive radiation pulse* in the area, the 'Glassing Beam' firing.
We know Spartan (and Elite) shield systems are vulnerable to E.M.P. It's entirely possible that the E.M. pulse from that shot had completely disabled the MJOLNIR shield systems until they could be reset. No other Spartan seems to have a shield either, but it's hard to tell.

*By Massive I mean Massive. There is clearly an error in the script here, Kat says the magnitude of the radiation spike is "ninety million" Roentgen.
This is well above the lethal dose, it's well above the level you die immediately too.
If that was the true reading, Noble should be dead in that white flare, that's enough ionising radiation to cook the flesh off your bones.

For referance 500 Roentgen will kill you after a few hours exposure, 90,000,000???

Death would be instantanious. No Question.

What amazes me most is how many things are just being forgotten by the people in this thread. First off:

A SPARTAN in MJOLNIR weighs in at just over half a ton. That's 500! KG right there. Even if Sangheili are physically superior to Humans, they'd have to be a whole ORDER OF MAGNITUDE stronger than us to even be able to LIFT a SPARTAN in armor. That's just unrealistic.

Second: remember the description of MJOLNIR when first put on by the SPARTAN-IIs? "Flawless amplification of speed and strength." There is no reason for any SPARTAN, II or III, to not have reaction and movement times measurable in the single digits of milliseconds due to first the armor, and second one of the augmentations: superconducting nerves, enhancing reaction times by several orders of magnitude.

Third: WHERE THE HELL WERE THE MOTION SENSORS? Oh no, the hud was hidden during the cutscene, he must have turned it off. WHY THE HELL WOULD THERE BE A FUNCTION LIKE THAT? Herpaderp I'm a lower my battlefield awareness.

Fourth: Emile was not inside. THE MAN WITH THE MOST EFFECTIVE CLOSE COMBAT WEAPON WAS NOT IN THE CLOSE COMBAT.

In any modern military, most, if not all, Noble team members would be facing at least COURT MARSHALL for sheer INCOMPETENCE.

There, /rant.

Human =/= Elite

Spartian = Elite

The books make a good point in showing that the elites are very capable, and that while John-117 is a killing machine the rest have failed in many ways.

To be fair, Spartans are never supposed to removed their helmets, other than obviously if they were completely out of combat. New Alexandria was still a combat zone, so none of them should have their helmets off. In GoO Kurt gives one of the members of Team Sabre a 'look' because he took off his helmet.
But the cutscene that you tore apart, I believe they handled it pretty well. But another thing Carter does, the cutscene before they head down to Halsey's lab on The Package, Carter holsters his weapon a just strolls casually down the hall, while the other three are scanning the area for hostiles.

The Sangheili were crouching. That nullifies the Motion Sensor.

Yeah, that part is a bit sketchy as well.
