I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

Read the second half of evilcam's post, it sums up my thoughts on that pretty well. It just wouldn't be wise to say "So, yeah, Reach flopped" right now. On top of the fact that Reach could have very well been their idea baby and thus to them, is their great success in their own opinion.

They were still -blam!-ing about Halo 2, you could see they were all pretty bitter about the game because they had to cut so much out of it. Whilst that's reasonable, I find it outrageous that they didn't admit they did things very wrong with Reach's story.

In fact, a lot of the Reach stuff was just from previous ViDocs. I really hoped that they'd acknowledge that they did wrong, but they didn't have a bad word to say about it... sigh...

Exactly. There are significant things wrong with Reach, but they didn't admit any mistakes whatsoever. That is what bugs me the most. Not even any simple acknowledgement even though they clearly put the idea across about Halo 2's failure.

9*14*10- REACH FALLS

Posted by: SonicJohn
They were talking about it from the perspective of being a developer.

Halo 2 was an awful experience for Bungie.
Halo Reach was a great development experience for Bungie.

Both are great end-products, it's just that the public at large had no idea just how stressful Halo 2 was for them.

Exactly... what they were trying to say was that. I mean for god sakes they had to cut out being on Earth in Halo 2, and brought it to halo 3, just think how different halo 3 would have been...

And halo reach was like heaven, they could essentially do whatever they wanted and they pretty much did lol...

  • 08.07.2011 4:28 PM PDT

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

ODST;MYTHIC Screenshot winner! One of the first to get their hands on the mythic map pack.

They set goals for Halo 2 and didn't reach them. Although the game turned out great and was amazing, to them, it was a failure.

Reach was their biggest game, and they accomplished big things with it. Just because you think Halo: Reach is a total fail, doesn't mean that it is.

You are welcome to your opinion, just so long as you know it's just that. An opinion.

The fans might not agree, but that's not the important part. Bungie brought together what THEY believed made Halo great and put that into one game. A lot of people would disagree (can't please everyone), but that's life.

I still disagreed with the Halo 2 "failing" thing, though. I know that A LOT of cool stuff got cut from Halo 2 and that game was hell to make, but I'd still say it was a success. It was the best title on Xbox Live for THREE YEARS until Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 came out and it has some of the BEST LEVELS IN VIDEO GAME HISTORY in my opinion (Terminal, Headlong, Turf, Relic, Containment, Delta Halo, and Regret).

I agree 100% with your secound paragraph.

Yeah, they did so much of what they wanted they seemed to forget about 3 pretty important novels.

One of my ideas.

Feline Doom : Steampunk mecha anime with kitties.

Here's what happened. All that was cut was put into Reach. Even then, more was cut. Boats were supposed to be in Reach, but they cut it. More live battles were supposed to be in Reach, but they cut it. The only reason they changed your silly competitive elements is because they rather didn't know if anyone would care, or people wanted it changed in the Beta.

Well even objectively reach is bad. The story was filled with one dimensional undeveloped characters, who went through little to no character development throughout the game. A lack of character development is the signature of a poor story, never mind the inconsistancies reach created with the already established canon from The Fall of Reach book.

This is what bugged me the most. The campaign's story. Not only did it defy already established canon, they replaced it with a crappy story with one-dimensional characters with no development. I won't get started on it's casual multiplayer. Extensive Version.

Make Bungie.net More Enjoyable: Read & Follow

I will say here that I am overall disquieted by what I believe is a overbalancing of attention onto Halo: Reach from the rightful object of the Halo Trilogy. Bungie closed this major chapter in their history with the release of Halo 3 and the conclusion of their great story. They did a wonderful job, in my opinion, of producing some additional Halo content to "put an exclamation" mark on the series with Reach and ODST, but the ViDoc seemed to transition Bungie's official position from their former status, which I just quoted, to one that places Halo Reach as their highest and consummate achievement with the Halo series.

I love all of Bungie's games, but the scope, size, and story of the Halo Trilogy is such that no supporting story in the Halo universe can possibly trump those of the Trilogy, regardless of the technical quality of the video game medium. I believe the failure to evince this truth was the greatest flaw of their fabulous and kind hour-long ViDoc.

well Master Cheif didn't talk very much giving him, at most, small character development so by YOUR theory all of the halos were bad stories.

Halo: CE Anniversary Achievement Idea
C-C-C-CANNON BREAKER!
Let Sgt. Johnson die on Halo.

Don't you mean "urked"? ... ahem.

Anyway, I agree that Halo 2 was one of the best Halo games. I loved the look into Covenant leadership and the Arbiter. I think people felt detached from Reach's campaign because it was too gritty, and our good ol' protagonist, the Master Chief, was absent for its duration. It was a different take on a Halo game that made many people feel uneasy. I thought it was a fantastically produced game. It's not my favorite Campaign, but the game itself is great.

I'll be on my own side.

The bit where they talked about the whole E3 2003 demo not being in the game struck a chord with me. Ever since the day I finished the H2 campaign, I've been bitter about that. Anytime the subject of H2 comes up, I think of how disappointed I was with the campaign. It's nice to see Bungie themselves acknowledging it, finally. Still bugs me though. That single shot BR, aliens were still alien, massive city, etc.

I guess Bungie learned from H2 though. No more overpromising.

Haha, I remember the first day I got H2 and I spent a good 45 minutes trying different button combinations to try and get the BR to fire single shot. I really wish they would have added that level too.... I really wanted to play it; to this day I STILL want to play it.

Although subtle, Master Chief does have a personality in the games. Also, if you read the books it shows even more.

And here I thought I was the only one let down by the H2 campaign.

Yeah, I know things like the mongoose was in Halo 2, but got cut.

Although, as what has been said is that it was hell for them, whether it would go out etc, it turned out to be one of the best games on Live, although the campaign was a bit weak in places I think.
