Can someone explain to me how Soma The Painter (story from Evolutions Volume I) fits into canon?

They're on the planet G617 g1. From the terminals, this is how The Flood began to resurface, right? Why, then, are there Forerunners living on this planet? Also, a Halo is placed there? Why would a Halo be placed there? Surely the Forerunners evacuated the area of the Galaxy where The Flood came back from?

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding something here, so please explain it to me. (I've read Cryptum btw.)

It wasn't stated that there was a Halo?

The planet is a secret to most of the Forerunner empire but a few.

Having never read this short story, I'd have to say that you should look over the Seaward wiki page.

Well, it's described as an "arc". I assume that is a Halo. Then at the end they say to "send word to The Didact, our test has arrived." or something like that. I think it's a fair assumption that it was a Halo.

And I know that the planet was generally a secret, but how does that fit into canon? Wasn't G617 g1 where the Forerunners rediscovered The Flood?

Oh that,no it was probaly the arrival of the Flood as it said it a green sickly trail behind it.

Yeah, that basically helps back up my confusion. So the planet is publicly discovered and this is when The Flood resurfaces in the galaxy. So when does the Soma The Painter story take place? There are Forerunners living on this planet and we're in the time where The Didact is alive and presumably a Halo is there.

Oh. Hmm. Is that it's supposed to be? Why do they say to send word to The Didact then? Do they somehow know it's The Flood?

I think so,some Forerunners knew of the Flood existence and were preparing for it.

G617 is a secluded Forerunner planet that most didn't know about. I don't have the book in front of me but I remember the "arc" you're referring to being the trail of the Flood coming towards the planet.

Since most Forerunners didn't know about G617, it seemed that the Flood had come from there, even though we now know it obviously came from somewhere else.

Hope this cleared some stuff up.

Yeah, it's my bad for focusing on it being described as an arc and assuming it was a Halo and not paying attention to the sickly green part. I'm still a bit mystified as to how they would know it was The Flood and to contact The Didact but that definitely makes a lot more sense to me now.
