I wouldn't put too much stock into other people's opinions. Play the game for yourself and decide whether you like it or not. The number of people posting on this forum is VERY small and it cant be said that the popular opinions represent the majority of the game's community.
I can only speak about personal experience of course and so I can only say that for me Halo 2 runs a lot better than Halo 1 and it's a lot more fun because of it.
Magnetism is one of the top issues I hear concerning Halo gameplay. Yes, Halo has inherently increased magnetism than what is regularly accustomed to on the pc and lets all be frank here, this has been known since 2001. So to say Halo 2 has a high level of magnetism with any sort of surprise is silly.
Halo 1 gets a lot more praise here than 2, and that's fine with me, but after playing both games recently I question just how much these people have actually played both games. While Halo 1 has less magnestism, even it has a lot of it. When I go from playing counterstrike to Halo 1 I hardly have to aim and I get killtaculars with the sniper (no exaggeration either).
When it comes down to it though, one of the biggest reasons I prefer Halo 2 to 1 is it because it runs the way its supposed to, as much as it dismays seasoned pc gamers.
Halo 1's net code is VERY shoddy. So much so that it tends to get very aggravating to play. Now some might consider lag and shot leading an increase in the games difficulty and by being able to work with it can separate good players from the bad. I completely disagree. All shot leading and lag do for me is create irksome gameplay and ultimately delay the inevitable. It delays my kills, and in turn delays my death. Rarely does it prevent me from getting my kill or avoiding my death.
Truth be told, both PC games were handled badly and have a ton of problems. I enjoy playing both games online on the 360 through Xbox Connect a lot more. A lot less problems (and a lot less complaining from the community at that). But that's a whole other topic.
Anyways, enough with my rant. My point was, don't let other people's experience influence your decision on the game. Find out for yourself which one you prefer.
As for your worries of finding a match, dont fret about it. There are always a few populated rooms going on. A little less players recently than there were a few months back, but there are always a couple games to play with 12-16 players in them and setting up your own game and inviting everyone online to join is very easy too.
