Hey, now!
This is officially either the greatest or worst thing to ever happen to Star Wars. I'm going with the former.

Emile is black. fact. his voice actor is black, his concept art is black, he acts stereotypically black, so therefore he must be black and Emile just sounds like the kind of name a black dude would have.
[EDIT] i have nothing against black people, but he could be any race so i didnt say "african-american" which is more politically correct.
He's from Eridanus, so he's not "African American". He wasn't even born on earth, so he's neither of those.
I think that classification is in err, anyway, as very few black people I know were born in Africa, then immigrated to the US.

I think it has to do with his back story. He is a very emotionally scarred man. He tries to hide any emotions. Hide any weakness. He constantly wears a mask metaphorically and physically to try to hide the fact that he's human.
Some cracks in his mask start to show by the end of the game. With Carter's death you can hear the anger in his voice. And the reason he was killed is because he went into such a blood rage that he stopped paying attention. His final words "I'm ready! how 'bout you!" show a bit of his Human side.
Almost everyone interpreted it as a cheesy badass last words type of thing. I saw it more as a man who simply doesn't want to live with all his scars anymore. He and the rest of Noble team are very complex characters if you actually examine them instead of just looking at the outer layer. It's a great story telling device to let you figure things out yourself.
That's why I like Emile so much, if you really pay attention, you can see the emotion behind his actions.
That's one of the reasons why I like his character so much, he reminds me of myself. I tend to keep my emotions to myself as well, compartmentalize them, and as such I occasionally react in a similar manner.
