Subject: Creating a tighter community

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

So Halo is on the way out, as far as Bungie.net goes. I myself am expecting a lot of change on this site, as it is, at the moment, very Halo oriented. Everyone is familiar with stat tracking and announcements to be found here and a predominant focus towards Halo in the forums.

But that's going to change.

Between the gap of waning of Halo and the waxing of the next Hawtness IP, I expect the community to go through a lot of changes. In a sense, it will be going through puberty. The community (the site, not the members) will have to mature and find ways to hold itself together during these new times.

First off, let me clear some things up. Most of the community isn't going to recognize me. I've been gone for a long, long time. But my time spent here before then was long and eventful. I've watched Bnet grow up while at the same time I grew up myself. I was, from the beginning, your typical young member full of angst. But I've grown a lot since then, and now I want the community (the site, not the members) to do the same.

What if the Septagon got a refit? I would love to see more comprehensive member profiles. I want to learn about who a person is, what they enjoy. I would greatly enjoy seeing someone's photos of their favorite moments. Wouldn't it be great to see more to the people you encounter beyond just their emblem, forum tag, and what they post?

The community is going to need solidarity in the future, as those that came here only for the Halo discussion inevitably drift away. I hope these ideas that present here could help prevent some of that, or at least spark discussion in this thread from all of you to generate new, better ideas. Wouldn't it be good to prep our community to be what it should be for Bungie's next great project?

Edit: Clarification of a point that I had made.

Edit: Perhaps this quote by HeyBlade, made on the second page, can better convey my feelings for posting this:

If we create a stronger base when the numbers are low, we should, as you suggest, try out some new features, then when the new members arrive the strong base will be able to help, advise and generally strengthen the growing community.

Bottom line: we're going to lose members, we just need to turn that to our advantage.

I work for the Department of Defense.

I read most of this. Not going to lie, I lost interest when you started saying the forum has to "mature".

These forums are home to some of the biggest idiots I've ever seen. It will not mature. They will still fester in their corner, and seep into others, as they have for years.

I do not see anything changing at all, aesthetics aside, the changes that Bungie will be undergoing will not drastically change the general "face" of the community one bit in my opinion.

That would be pretty cool although you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she posts.

Then you missed the point entirely. I wasn't talking about the people, I was talking about the site.

The beta is super awesome. RogueAssassin27 is now the person who got my Totodile's nickname. Hoo-hah! Relevant.inb4lock

DAT'S WHAT SHE SAID.

Also, I don't think that would be necessary. We aren't a social networking site.

Make choices, and don't look back.

I always loved reading the "Average Joe" articles and always loved doing events where you had to run into certain members and beat them, or things like that. I recognize a decent chunk of the community, but just by their user names or avatars. This sounds cool though =]

I would like to get to know people here more, but I don't want Bungie.net to turn into something like Facebook (even remotely).

I don't know the community will have to mature

The community doesn't like to be called immature....

Community sites have been doing this for years. RedvsBlue did it from the beginning. Any BB has these capabilities.

I come here to talk about Halo with everyone else. If that's all that everyone wanted, why would we have The Flood?

But we do have it, so is it that alien of a concept to believe the community, on some level, wants more?

Want a friendlier community? Be more friendly.

Want a more helpful community? Be more helpful.

We are the community, we make it in our own image and we get the results we deserve/create.

Bungie provides the place, we're the ones who live in it and how we act while in that space, that determines "the community".

Therefor, I am clearly an angry post-pubescent boy with entitlement issues and an overactive sense of my importance and place in the world.

I'm not talking about the people, I meant the site. The collective community. If Halo leaves completely from Bungie.net, we are left with so little. Too little, I fear, to keep most of the community together.

I want the site to mature. The physical webpages. Mature = grow into something more.

When you really think about it, why would any woman say, "Creating a tighter community."

1) There is more than one grammatical error present.

2) Somewhat irrelevant.

;)

As for stating that bungie.net is not a social networking, you are (technically) correct. I do not believe that was the question though. He is asking whether, or not we should implement some new features-some present on social networking sites-that would help keep the community together.

Yeah... It would be quite a longshot before things start to change.

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

The thing is, and I'm not one to use the social networking shtick, but what's proposed is pretty much social networking. A comprehensive profile with the intention of getting to know other people with like-minded interests. This isn't just a case of adding a "like/dislike" functionality. What's been proposed is pretty much the core of any social networking site.

I'm not against attempting creating tight-knit community. Nor am I against making friends from Bungie.net either, it's the part of the experience here, but that shouldn't be something emphasized as proposed on a game developer's forums.

Now I have no problem with a few extra optional fields to fill in for various off site contact information. Your standard instant messengers, twitter, and even facebook to accompany your Live profile. Something simple.

Blah, blah, blah, too much chatty from me, I'm out.

"Nothing in the 'Verse can stop me."

I've always been a fan of more indepth profiles and I, for one, am for this.

yoo•zel- ('yoo-zhul): slang: vb.

Officium quod Fidelitas.

I don't think anyone really does. They used to be the glue of Bungie.net but now you have highly visible public boards to yammer on.

I'd love to see the customizable options return to grou...chapters, ahem. As well has having new life put into them but it's hard to define them anymore. Are they LAN party free websites? Are the clan websites? Are they there to talk about the dirty little secrets of Bungie.net or things the rules don't allow? It's mind boggling.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

Hi Prommy. It has been awhile. Welcome back.

OT: I don't have any problem with the webteam expanding site features. Better features are usually always a good thing. I don't really care about expanding them in the "getting to know a user more" direction. I can do that myself by talking to them or reading their posts. I'd prefer it stay that way in most regards, because that's really the only way to get to know someone on a board. They'll show us who they are by what they do, rather than what they put into some field on a profile.

Community Carnage group
They call me Arch. YOU SHALL NOT PASS!

Posting on the forums: 5 minutes.
Making a thread: 20 minutes.
Claiming you are the alt of a banned account: Priceless.
For everything else, there's stosh.

I love the concept prometheus, but when reality sets in, this would be very hard and more of a burden for Bungie to maintain and control.

This is very easy to accomplish when you ask some if they would like to be friends on facebook or whatever. If they accept, bam everything you have wanted here is only a few clicks to the left. Its easier and less stressful on the community and forums in general..

From what I have learnt as an Organizier CC events, is that twitter and other social networking sites are cool tools.. (i dont bother with twitter though)

But a facebook group for the "Bungie Community" is not a bad idea.

  • 08.07.2011 8:57 PM PDT

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

ODST;MYTHIC Screenshot winner! One of the first to get their hands on the mythic map pack.

Some people like privacy. Some people don't want to be known for more than their emblem and gamertag.

If they do, they join groups. They make friends, sometimes make friend's pas this site, and onto Facebook, or even real life.

And as Halo discussion drifts away, discussion of Bungie's new IP will come, and things will be the same. (Well, except member count will rise, and there will be a lot more immaturity, being that we will have to deal with "It's better on the Xbox, no it's better on the PS3!" BS)

For people who love Bungie.net, they already have their own communities here that they cherish. Private groups mainly. Or the Flood >_>

  • 08.07.2011 9:39 PM PDT

It would be nice to see new additions to profile options and customizations. What I would really like though is more customizable options for groups, like posters above mentioned. I think groups should get some new attention, rather than a site-wide revamp. I doubt anything will change until Bungie announces their new IP(s) officially, though.

Maybe what seems to be the tide of all your opinions is right, and the chapters, the fond name Yoozel has reminded me of, would be the right medium to see change in rather than profiles.

I do agree in that I can't quite describe what they would need either. New admin tools? More clan-like features? Maybe even some more officially-noticed Chapters, Bungie endorsed so to speak. Ideas?
