Subject: Creating a tighter community

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

We will get loads and and loads of new members and things will be good. I dont think we will loose the bond.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

I guess I just don't like settling for "fine." I just feel the need to always push for better.

δόξει τις ἀμαθεῖ σοφὰ λέγων οὐκ εὖ φρονεῖν.

Euripides, Bacchae. 480.

How "mature" these fora become is heavily dependent on what age rating Bungie's next title is given.

Almost a ghost.

I think it's a pretty good idea. This is the only site that I've stuck with for a while and although other sites have the function in place, this is the only place I'd really take advantage of it.

An M rating means nothing anymore. It never really did.

But a PEGI 18 rating means something in Europe.

I have to agree with you on that. Bnet should remain the same.

I would like to get to know people here more, but I don't want Bungie.net to turn into something like Facebook (even remotely).

This, basically.

The community is going to lose a lot of members, both a good and bad thing, the remaining members will become the tight community you speak of, and it will grow, the Phoenix will rise from the ashes as it where.

I just feel we are going to be losing members. A lot. I think this is the perfect opportunity to think about building up our site's foundation, maybe try out a few new elements in the community while everything's changing.

I want to get people to think. That's my goal. I want to get some members to step back and look at what we have and ask themselves "Is this enough? Can we do better?"

...then the Phoenix will get trampled to death by the stampede of new users who will show up when Bungie finally gets around to unveiling whatever it is they're working on.

I remember you. But, I have to disagree. I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't want to get to know everyone here. Sure, I'll play online and discuss matters on the forum, but you're almost implying that we really get to know each other.

Um, no. At least as far back as Halo CE, all the games that Bungie has released have had a "Mature" rating. Not everyone here is over 17 years of age. Even people who are well into their 40's fail to act maturely.

If we create a stronger base when the numbers are low, we should, as you suggest, try out some new features, then when the new members arrive the strong base will be able to help, advise and generally strengthen the growing community.

Bottom line: we're going to lose members, we just need to turn that to our advantage.

This is exactly what I was trying to convey.

@Helveck

Just an Average Joe...

The cycle of the Internet and these forums and particular work, prevent it from easily changing to something better, or more mature. Being gone for a long time, and coming back expecting some sort of miraculous change to take place that parallels your life is simply ridiculous.

Lets look at why...

A small, tight-knit community once existed here before I even signed on as a member, and was more of an observer than anything. It was a place with a small population, and people who shared common interests more than complaints were here to discuss what they loved, what they wanted, what they'd be interested in seeing or seeing changed, and and so on and so forth.

Multiply the population exponentially. Then take into account how easy it is for young, ignorant and or stupid people to access the Internet, and also the number of households that possess game consoles. After you've done that, compare this state to the state of things ten years ago when the numbers for all those things referenced above were massively reduced.

At this time, gaming forums were not massively accessed by "casual" gamers, nor were the developer forums. Now you have older gamers who still may frequent forums and Communities such as this one, on top of a new generation of gamers who think both the World and Internet is their outlet to complain and to act foolishly upon. That may be a bit of an extreme description or generalization, but it illustrates the point I hope...

Which is, this place is growing and will likely continue to. And it will grow with fans, and people who simply want to complain. It will grow with people who embrace anonymity, and others who want to know one another on some "personal level". It will grow apart before it grows tighter. It would be like filling a balloon with too much water... At first, it's small and not stretched beyond any limit. But begin to fill it, and once balloon begins to retain too much water, it becomes crowded to the point where trying to hold it together under that much weight pressure is just impossible.

The tightness can only really exist in smaller controlled areas, such as the utilization of Private Groups. People who really want to share their passion of a particular subject or area of the game are free to group together a tight-knit section of friends to enjoy things as they might have been many years ago. But to expect that from such a massive population with so many differentiating opinions and tastes now... is like I said to begin with, ridiculous.

I agree with your post, totally, but there must be some way to increase the standing of the community. I would love to see Bungie remain either the same or get closer, we need to act now before its too late.

Another response is that the Halo franchise was the type of gameplay experience that invites complaints, if it doesn't go well people complained. That was because of the sort of person Halo attracted, its simple fun gameplay meant that it was played by all ages globally, there was bound to be difference in opinion.

If the next IP is different as i suspect it will be, it will attract a new clientele, and a new ethos where the onus is on discussion not complaint.

Thats what i hope anyway.

So you're saying the site should evolve and have more features that make the site more tight-knit?
I think we'll always be a little too big to be considered tight knit.

I was, from the beginning, your typical young member full of angst. But I've grown a lot since then, and now I want the community (the site, not the members) to do the same.

Whoo.

I can't wait for everyone to leave, being here for the "rebirth" of the community, if you will, will be great. I've only been here for a short time and looking at all the different events/accomplishment/general hilarity that went on here before I joined makes me feel quite ... unaccomplished, like I missed out.

Most of this was because Bungie's Halo series was coming to a close when I came, the community has grown and they also lost excitement of all the new events they've seen so many times before. The "Magic" was disappearing, but now it's a fresh start, the community has returned to it's infancy.

We're no longer "Halo Veterans", we're the newbies of their new franchise, fresh faced youngsters ready to explore and to learn in this new world. A place where only we exist and due to our small numbers we all know one another, thanks to this new world we will also regain the vitality we once had.

Instead of everyone being faceless anonymous they'll be "That guy, who's a artist" and "That guy, who's a doctor" and whenever we have one of those "Great ideas" that you just have to do, we won't go "Ah but that sounds like work" or "It's impractical", we'll say "I have to do this" and when there's something we can't do due to lack of knowledge or ability, we won't give up, we'll ask the artist to help us with our drawings or the writer to help us with our storyboards.

We will achieve things as of yet we're too old and lazy to accomplish, we will achieve greatness, and for a short while coming here will no longer be a routine, it'll be a experience.
